Photo No.1 is the ultimate muscle car, 1970 Plymouth Superbird Hemi 426. When new, these jiggers were faster than the tyre technology of the time. 200mph laps at Daytona. The bumps on the top of the front guards were not for air flow but to allow space for the top of the tyres when the suspension was squashed down by g-force on the high banks at Daytona and Talladega. Prior to this mod, the wheel wells were emitting clouds of smoke as the tyre rubbed under the guards.
In 1981-82 I was offered one in Owatonna, Minnesota, for US$8,000 and would have landed in Oz at about A$16,000. I had a mortgage and young children at the time, and a "we are not amused" mater familias so bye bye birdie. @#$%, these things are worth close to or in excess of a million today.
