Hi guys.
It looks like we might be able to put $20,000 into buying a discovery next year. What would you buy? Can you be specific, I'm not heaps familiar with discos having spent more time on the 110 threads.
Priorities are:
auto - for my wife.
Diesel
7 seats (or 5 with ability to add 2 later)
it'll be mainly suburban driving with long holiday trips and easy camping so no need for extreme off road ability. Prob only light trailer duties.
I don't think I need heaps of power but wouldn't mind your thoughts.
No need for fancy seats, I'll get covers
cd player would be nice.
What's the deal with s, se, hse?
Bull bar would be nice.
The dream would be to out 4wd my bro in Laws $80k worth of seriously customised 70 series toybota trayback, but I'm guessing that'll be unlikely without more dough.

Btw, some great pics on the show your ride thread.

s pack is the poverty pack, hse is all the fruit including leather, sunroof, probably front and rear a/c. SE somewhere in between. I have a S with a bit extra i think, it is called a platnium.

$20k should get you an early one with a bit of fruit in it. Seven seater is only suitable for kids in the back.

I heard of an 03 TD5 S 7 seater with 160k going for 17K recently out of Vic - but that's wholesale, and no one bought it!!

I hope they are that cheap when I'm loking soon:)

I had a look at it recently & it's in immaculate condition.
Rear A/C too.

I'd like to get around $18K for my 03 TD5 (manual, 5 seats, ACE) after Xmas when the new one arrives so I hope the price range is about right.

While everyones bodyshape is different, check the back (7 seats) yourself because I'm 6"2, long lanky legs & 100kg's & I can sit in the back OK. while I wouldnt go to Sydney there, at trip for an hour or so would be quite OK.

As to what you would get, when you're ready to go, look in carsales.com.au or trading post etc put in 20-25k & see what pops up. You could be looking at a time when someone is going o/s & needs to get rid of their car quickly & grab a bargain. Prices vary heaps depending on all sorts of factors of age, service, mods, full moon etc.
For my 2c worth of must haves would be is to get ACE if one is available. Mine has it & I love it.
Dave.

... bought end May'09 from a wholesaler in Lidcombe (found on Ebay ... hate to admit that, but that's how it went down)

02/2004 build - 04/2004 complianced D2a (facelift model)
Td5 Auto Classic Country pack 7 seater.
120,000km one owner. Reasonable service history.
Has SLS rear suspension - (I like it!)
Rear Aircon'
Single CD player/Radio + 6 speakers
Factory DVD player (screen on roof/player under drivers seat) with remote and 3 x sets IR headphones
Tinted windows
Factory waterproof seat covers (nice extra)
Cloth trim
Larger 8" (instead of 7") 6 spoke alloy rims
Larger factory 255/65 sized tires
Tow bar
Dual Battery system (2nd's a deep cycle battery) wired in parallel
Two in car mobile phone kits (gonna get rid of one, maybe both)
Factory rubber floor mats
Very clean underneath (no/minimal offroad)
All original (except for dual battery system) good duco and interior tidy
All owners manuals, security card, service books
(the D2a facelift model has the bigger factory fitted intercooler & alot of the D2 original model problems and issues have been fixed/sorted in the D2a)
The D2a also has the CDL factory (re)fitted ... it is VERY capable offroad and in sand/beach in standard trim ... should give the Toymota a run for its money :)

Basically, what you're looking for is exactly what we were looking for ... took about 3 months of looking online everyday. Wanted a manual though, wife can handle a manual no worries, both been driving manuals for last 23years, but went auto as the manuals are far & few and auto's are plentiful ... and the price was right ! :)

Paid $22,500 ...

YMMV
Kev..

Agree with everything DI5CO said.

My '99 has ACE and with 500kg of humans onboard recently, really earned its stripes.

At the height of the high petrol prices (July 08) I picked up on ebay a D2a 2003 S V8 auto with 7 seats and 175,000kms on it at an auction house in Newcastle - $9,000 !! Diesels were going for $22 - 25,000 at the time. Have to do a lot of k's to get that difefrence back.

I was looking everyday on carsales and ebay and this one came along and I jumped at it. We were living in Brisbane at the time and got it shipped up.

I have had to replace the ABS shuttle valve and do the heads, but I think I am still ahead. Especially love the SLS for towing and off road.

I just picked up a 2002 Discovery II ES V8 Auto in Brisbane for $19,000 with 12 months warranty.

It is 7 seater with SLS and ACE and has only done 79,000 km, from what I could tell it doesnt appear to have had much if any offroad driving either.

I'm currently looking at a 11/2002 MY03 Auto S TD5 7 seater with just under 140,000km's. The asking price is $15,000. It has a pretty good service history at a landrover dealer, has had 2 owners, condition is good with no major marks or dents on body but the beige interior is a bit dirty. It needs new tyres and will soon require the 140K service. I'll be having a second look at it today and making a decision!!!

Good Luck!

If the owners didn't care for the interior then did they really care for the car? And a service history may have unseen holes in it - any owner can refuse permission for parts of a big service to be done or refuse routine maintenance recommendations in the name of penny pinching. There are many cars on the market out there. Be very picky. But a neglected interior starts the bells ringing for me.

There is some good buys under $20,000(d2a)
We decided to update to a D2a, there wasn't anything here for sale in tassie,So we bought one from Sydney & drove it home.
Got the dealer to fax me the service history, then got in contact with the owner...bit of a chat? ,Paid my deposit, then flew to sydney.......

Its a 2003 (I think) S model V8 Auto. 61000klms
Fitted with Sunroof,Leather, and Ace...(Leather seats & Ace not a good combination?)

As mentioned earlier in this post I just bought a 2002 Discovery ES V8 with 79,000 km for $19,000.

It has leather, ACE, 7 seats, CD stacker etc. etc. No sunroof though and the SLS has been dissabled with a conversion to coils performed recently in Brisbane. I am thinking of putting bags back in soon, I dont know why they took them out.

I picked it up on saturday and drove from Brisbane to Rockhampton on sunday for work. I now see why everyone likes Land Rovers. :D

Here are a couple of pics, sorry they are still the ones from carsales. When I get a chance I will take some fresh ones and post in the show us your disco section.

That would go for two of us. Still, i think 20g is a little much, and i think, the owner will come at 18...

But then again, i'd go the v8, rather than the TD5
