TDC 300tdi

Im about to replace the vacum pump but not sure what the easyest way is to find TDC. My manual says to use a special tool which I dont have, is there any way around this. Is it possible to crank engine over when pump is off and visually check for correct position. cheers

I know this is rough, but taking the vac pump off without having the crank in the right position isn't a problem - as you undo the bolts you'll notice the unit push out a little if it is on the cam - the piston is spring loaded. After you have it off, rotate the engine by hand a bit until you can see the cam drop to normal. Then install the new vac pump.

Thats how i do it, its not vital to have it at TDC when you take it off for things to be correctly aligned when it all goes back together. Once off its easy enough to get back on. matt
