Saw this on the ABC news tonight...hope no one from here was involved.

Two dead in Sunshine Coast car crash | The Courier-Mail (http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,25952595-952,00.html)

Parents went to the aid of their daughter broken down on the mwy. The news footage showed a RR at the seen. Looks like it's run into the back of the daughter's stationary car, killing the parents....

must be awful for her :( first having a crash that day then seeing her parents killed when they come to help her because of the crash earlier in that day.

A good lesson for others too DON'T stand next to the side of the road unless you have too......one of the most dangerous places to be IMHO :(

Very sad. :( But as you said dullbird, people underestimate the risk of pulling over on a busy freeway. I've had a few close calls when I've been first on scene at accidents and diverting traffic till emergency services arrive...and that's with safety gear and traffic wands (yeah, I carry that sort of stuff all the time).

Horrible stuff :(

And people wonder why we (Fire Brigade) usually elect to close the road when we're working at an accident these days......

Yes you only have to look at some of those late night police reality shows to see the crashes and near misses taken from the onboard cameras and they have all manner of flashing beacons to warn motorists.

Very sad for all involved. :( :(

freeways are alot more dangerous than prople percieve. people constantly stop on the inside lane, and I saw somone reversing out of the E-way lane on the M5 last week.

This has got me thinking I should carry a Hi-vis vest in my car. And yellow, not orange. I notice people instinctively slow down if they think, even for a second, that the person wearing a yellow vest up ahead may be a cop. I know if I was standing on the shoulder of the highway I would prefer that people saw me a mile off. I wonder if you can get white LED flicker lights similar to emergency vehicles too? Wired up to the hazard lights would be nice.

Very Sad, unfortunately drivers don't know how to drive these days, they are sadly in their own world, treat cars as if they are in a lounge chair at home and don't look further than the car ahead to know what's up ahead. It's just a Quick mode of transportation. :(

Very sad for all involved. The poor girl will go thru years of guilt, through no fault of her own.

I think the best thing to carry are hi-vis vests, and E-Flares. They can be seen for a fair distance, are portable, and safe around fuel. IMHO, these things should be compulsory for every vehicle on the road.

If you are thinking of putting strobes/LEDs etc on your vehicle, stick to Amber (aka Yellow/Orange). Red and Blue are obviously off limits and white has all sorts of conditions as to when they can be used, which direction etc etc (ie: only forward facing and not activated when headlights are on)

says he with a Red beacon on his Land Rover...

no, I do not wonder at all ...

it's just that some people are quite impatient and it seems they aren't prepared (in all senses of the word) to take an alternative route if there's going to be a substantial delay

....otherwise, altogether a sad and unpleasant matter for all concerned (incl police & services)

I like your lesson on standing next to the road

I have lost count the number of people i have seen who just stand next to there, broken cars, yesterday on the M1, broken down car, on the right hard shoulder, 2 girls sat behind it on the floor, one inside, how FS, is that, pure stupidity....

You can not legally display red/white/blue or red/blue or red or blue strobes without being affiliated with an emergency service in a public area on road. It is against the law so be carefull. These lights and combinations are reserved for emergency services and vehicles. Also if possible try and park your vehicle in a defensive position eg at a slight angle to the vehicle or scene you are attending so if oncoming traffic does hit it it sends the parked vehicle off or onto the road rather than into the car or scene. It should be positioned facing oncoming traffic.

I watched the new footage tonight, looked like the driver had a new red Rangie, all damaged at the front
