4.0 engine vs 4.6
Sunroof standard on HSE
7" wheels vs 8"
Some different electrics/trim.
Not sure if the SE has traction control. HSE does.
Probably more that I can't remember :(.

Does SE have climate control and therefore the same potential blend motor problem as HSE or is it just a basic [trouble freee?] manual operated Heating/Air Conditioning system?

And there's never any trouble with the blend motors............

I believe my 99 4.0 is same/similar spec to 98 SE, and have previously had a '95 HSE. Observation of differences so far...
HSE vs SE (or 4.0)
4.6L V8 vs 4.0 V8 (not a huge amount of power or fuel economy difference IMHO)
leather memory seats vs cloth manual seats (leather was an option though)
sunroof vs none
headlight washer wipers on HSE vs none
fog/driving lights on HSE vs none
vanity mirror with light on HSE vs no light
cruise and stereo controls on steering wheel vs cruise only
a bit more fake wood on the dash on HSE
CD stacker and subwoofer in cargo area vs none
something about the side trim on HSE? more rubber moulding?
18" alloys vs 16" alloys
The only one of these that I really miss is the leather memory seats, but I have a cunning plan... ;)
Another couple of things worth noting is that the engine management changed from Sagem "GEMS" (95-98) to Bosch "Thor" (99-02), and rear wheels only Traction Control (95-98) to four wheel TC (99-02).
Cheers, Paul.

just quickly, 95/96 se's had traction control as option here ,wasent std , my jan 96 build has not got it .after 97ish was std on wards ,rear only . my se does have headlight washers , the 99 s model ,the budget one they were selling cheap to get rid of 4L /lucas motors , to make way for bosch powered motors they didnt have headlight washers along with other std features .my se does have rear cd stacker on pass side cargo area .my se does have cruz control with radio ,cassette ,cd ect vol /change ch /and mode buttons ect on the weel .and as for blend motor problems ,my se has a non working hot air flow on passenger side, only has cold /on drivers side has both hot and cold .to fix just with finger close dash vent to even climate you want ,or expensive option change blend motor on pass side ,well i can live with it .oh yes one more ,se does have climate control (digital read out on mine ,fully auto setting ect ect ;hope this answers your questions .and while here my se 4 LT motor yet to slip linner or do head gasket just in case you ask later ,cheers.

Actually, Paul, I think that both had 16" alloys, but the HSE ones were 8" wide and the S/ SE ones were 7" wide.

Thanks everyone for your valued inputs. The final decision was to go with the HSE , The additional creature comforts pushed it over the line so I guess you will be hearing a lot more from me over the next few months. Rgrds

In Australia. the early HSEs did indeed come with 16" x 8" rims.

Hi all,
I thought this would be easier than starting a new thread.
I've found a 99 4.0 ( 1999 LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER P38A Cars For Sale in VIC - carsales.com.au - carsales.com.au (http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/dealer/details.aspx?R=9373218&__Qpb=true&keywords=&Cr=5&__Ns=pCar_PriceSort_Decimal|0||pCar_RankSort_Int32 |1||pCar_Make_String|0||pCar_Model_String|0&SearchAction=N&__N=1216%201282%204294965541%204294965478%20391%20 412%20903%201247&silo=1011&PriceFrom=391&PriceTo=412&seot=1&__Nne=15&__No=0&trecs=15&__sid=12AA59CC6038) ) which is what I wanted but it seems to have the new manifold and all the search info I can find suggests that these 4.0's do not have the Bosch equipment.
I was under the impression that the 99 4.0 models were a runout of the 98 SE's? If this was the case wouldn't it have the old manifold, or do they have the new manifold but not the Bosch injection?
I am looking for a 4.0 with cloth seats, but with the newer Bosch setup.
Thanks!

That is the later Bosch set-up. 99MY is not exactly the same as "Sold/registered in '99".

2000MYs had the clear indicators.

Looks identical inside and out to my 99 4.0 except this one:
Is cleaner
Is red
Has more straight panels
Has not had the "aftermarket options" fitted that mine has.
Looks pretty good.

Looks really good - and genuine. I would certainly take advantage of the "Any Test Welcome' option. But I wonder about how good is that three year warranty - it sounds great.

the GEM VIN series ended at ....WA410481 and the Bosch series started with VIN..... XA410482.
The VIN of XA417458 in the photo is well past the changeover ... seems to have scrubbed up well! go test it!...and good luck!

Thanks very much guys for your help!
The warranty is a nice feeling, but i'm not too sure a company like that would be around in 3 years time...will keep you posted!
Thanks,
James

what are the actual physical differences between a 4lt and 4.6. lt engine. lent my 2000 landy to a friend who kindly cooked the motor if I have to rebuild thinking of upping it to 4.6

Basic engine , the main difference is in the stroke .
4.6 ltr crankshaft gives a longer stroke and has shorter conrods than a 4.0 ltr .
The pistons are different but can interchange depending on the compression ratio required , the rings are the same .
There are other differences that are mated to each as in autos , ETC .

Also the blocks were graded differently in the factory, with the 4.6 getting the most uniform wall thickness - though not needed to know if your rebuilding one, but of you can get a 4.6 block is reassuring.
The camshafts are different too.

I understand that new blocks are getting very hard to come by these days. They only exist on somebody's shelf somewhere.

Is there anything P38 related that you don't own?

Reliability was an option on the order sheet wasn't it? If you ticked it they made your car on Wednesday.
