seems my disco's developed a lifter rattle under load. It's a 2000 model 4.0 v8 with 140000 km's on the clock. Only changed the head gaskets 20000 k's ago and at the time thought of changeing the lifters but didn't:(.
Is there anything else I should be aware of or should I just fit new lifters? is there room to draw the lifters out through the head so I don't have to remove the inlet manifold? ( I have a set of lifter lifters). cheers.

If it only happens under load it isn't likely to be lifter rattle.

i doubt its lifter noise too, probably pinging or exhaust leak at the flange or manifold head joint. just in case it is lifter noise, you must remove the inlet manifold to gain access to the lifters, does it make the noise at idle? if so maybe the steel insert in one of the rocker arms has come loose

Best take a squiz at the exhaust manifold bolts for tightness, a lifter rattle won't happen under load like Bigjon says.

I cannot get it to make the same noise when stationary. If I give it a quick hard rev I'll get a bit of a metalic click but otherwise nothing like what I hear from inside moving vehicle.
Will check the exhaust manifold bolts and I do hope they're loose.:D

found a hole in the front left muffler/cat. Didn't sound like it was coming from there from the inside but it's better than internal engine noise:D

Hi-flow cats? is that the go? I was thinking of doing away with them all together, (see technical chatter).
