Exhaust disappointment

I had my 90 booked in today to get the central muffler replaced with a stainless straight through piece of pipe, but came away empty handed.

Once they got it up on the hoist, they informed me that 3 bolt 2.5" flanges are not common, and they had none in stock :(

Seems most vehicles have either 2 or 4 bolt flanges. Must be one of those Land Rover things.

I'll have another attempt next week when they've sourced a couple of them.

Quote to get it done (in stainless) is "$60 to $70", which I thought was pretty good.

But any good exhaust "fabricator" would have blank undrilled flanges available.
They not that rare and they could have modified it to a two bolt....

Buy one of those cheap vernier calipers and measure your exhaust tube: if it's stock you may find that it's not 2.5 inch but 60mm - a metric sized exhaust system ( My 95 Disco is). Most exhaust shops in Australia only have tube and fittings for US exhaust pipe: 2 1/4 ( 58mm) & 2 1/2 (63mm). Having been through some interesting experiences with a custom exhaust, I'd suggest making sure the piece of pipe you get is larger than 60mm. It may seem inconsequential, but the slight decrease in dia does alter the flow characteristics of the exhaust.

It was 3:00 on a Friday afternoon. They said they could bodge something up, but I think it was too late in the day to start thinking too hard.

I want to keep it to the standard 3 bolt pattern so I can put the standard muffler back in if needed without any hassle.

Langy - I just measured it with my very old fashioned verniers, and the OD is 63mm or 2.5", so looks like the 2.5" flange they have ordered will be OK. Thanks for the heads up though.
