R.M.Williams. Well made, long lasting, and the stuff fits. Expensive though.

King Gee - as above, but cheap. Add in Blundstone, Redback, Akubra, etc.

What is 'Outback Clothing' :lol2:

Depends on the look you are after Juddy.
Do you want to look like a Cocky out on the town, or one of the fella's mustering ?

RM Williams would be the most famous outfitters, followed by Thomas Cook, but the funny thing with Thomas Cook is I've never seen anyone wearing their stuff outside of the cities.

If you want to look like a cashed up city slicker that's trying to look 'county', go to RM's and spend away. Their gear is good but pricey, and we get no where near the range they offer in their big city boutique stores.
FWIW not too many around here wear RM's except when going out, and then it's usually only the Tweed jacketed, landed gentry brigade although admittedly most all blokes wear RM's elastic sided boots for dress ups, although I prefer the Roper style boots myself.

There's only one fella I know that wears RM ensembles day in, day out and that's my mate Jon, the Chardonnay quaffing, G&T sipping fencing contractor who's clothes go in the rag bag at the slightest tear or wear.
He is a walking, talking ad for the quintessential bloke from the bush with a voice that would've put John Laws out of business 40 years ago.
A wool classer by profession and all round good bloke, if looks count, he has it nailed. ;)

Wranglers in their Pro Rodeo Cut are the jeans of choice around here, closely followed by the Aussie made Blue Dog jeans.
Work shirts can be anything from Hard Yakka, King Gee, etc through Ariat, Wrangler to whatever's on special at Target or Rivers :D
I prefer Rivers drills ATM, tough as nails and more pockets than you can poke a stick at. They've outlasted all my Yakka and King Gee shirts by a long stretch.

Oh, and Brian, RM's don't fit my bony arse at all, too low cut and cut too short in front, whereas the straight legged Pro Rodeo Wranglers fit like a glove, but they are only working dacks, although most have a 'going out' pair too.

Good luck.

I have thrown out all but a few of my denim jeans and now I almost exclusively wear moleskins instead. The RM ones are good, but they are too expensive to buy and then ruin with work/day to day stuff. Instead I wear the hard yakka ones, they are longer lasting too.

I buy lots of my shirts at second hand shops. They've got lots of things and it's all really cheap...You can't have too many blue button up shirts!

Oooooh so sorry Juddy... just noticed your heading, he wanted Out back NOT Outback.

Not sure where but probably any adult store should sell them for you.

I'd look at Hemp clothing, it's light, lasts for years, easy to wash in a bucket and is breathable so you keep cool whilst wearing it.

Ahh, here you go, "The Australian Outback Collection - Hemp Bushman Shirt"
As you can see from the pic, it is the shirt of choice for real bushmen who brave the harsh aussie outback :D

You want boots, forget RM Williams, overpriced and no where near as comfortable as Ian Harrold boots in Sydney. They feel like wearing a pair you have had for years.

Gday,
couple things, moleskins are OK, jeans are more common day by day,
most wear 'ringers" shirts where Ive seen, and the majority wear a mid blue refered to by everyone as "ringer blue"... and yes rm's also good but unless thru the 2nds shop (in SA) or when they have a clearout (about twice a year) way too exxy!!

I suggest try:-

bill drews "BBB clothing", they are good comfy clothing worn by most station people ...jeans, shirts etc,...been around for years, good drill cotton shirts etc

BBB Rural & Outback Clothing (http://www.bbboutbackclothing.com.au/Home/Home.asp)

also try BLUEDOG clothing, another good bloke & good clothes, bluedog lives in marree in SA when not travelling about to sell the clothes... and yes he is known to all as "bluedog".. I love the shirts, The best is the three button, "ringer blue" l/sleeve top...I reckon anyway!

BlueDog Clothing & Jeans - Country Clothing Australia, Outback Casual Clothing Australia, Cowboy Traditional Australian Country Clothing (http://www.bluedogjeans.com/)

I havent any interest or link to either of the above, but am good friends with "bluedog"..

cheers

Thanks for the info on BlueDog Dig, as I mentioned in my first post, his jeans and shirts are second only to Wranglers in popularity here.

I guiltily admit I'm not a wearer....yet

No-one has mentioned Airds of Lochinvar.

Maybe Juddy is a young 'en and wants the new metro cowboy look.

I dunno :no2: a young cowboy in layered pastel polo shirts with upturned collar just doesn't look right to me :(

oh god, so many variables, out there in the Bush, what to wear when, its a big dilemma, i mean when you need to peel a Roo off the bull bar, what's the appropriate dress for this?

Picking up a woman, if I happened to be on the Birdsville track, and a single woman wanted me to pick her up, ( that for a start would be a tad strange ) plus, if she only wanted a lift then maybe, but if she wanted a 3 some then i would have to run that via the wife. Oh and its not just a man thing, the wife's got to have the right gear too

Outback where? desert? west Qld? west NSW? east WA? in company? going to be washing or is it a trip where you won't have water? Looking to pick up a woman? boys only?

these things all play a part in what you wear really :D:D:D:D

Geez, I had to google what Merrel's were :o

Another good place to look for 'country' clothes is a good saddlery. That's often where we buy our jeans, hats, boots, etc.

Peeling roos and other sundry wildlife from the vehicle and just off the road so no one else hits the carcass you generally want working clothes, it can get messy. ;)

Depends on how messy, but how about a pair of disposable overalls?

Only be trendy in Hannibal Lecter's company, but keep you more or less clean to get back into the car.

my advice, if your going when its hot take something light with a high UV rating. if its going to be cold take something warm. and if its going to be wet don't go, looking for sticks rocks etc to get you out of the mud in the rain sucks. other wise look for comfortable cheap stuff (been a truckie for a wile and comfort helps the k's fly by), after all if your outback the roo's wont give a stuff what your wearing. :D

I have images of rounding a bend to see a badly dented vehicle, a splattered roo and the driver picking up pieces of flesh whilst donning a sperm suit.

I cannot understand the concept of paying $200 for 1 shirt, just one curry stain and it's still an oil rag.

If you want to look like a concrete cowboy, as Rick says go to your local Horseland and pay plenty of coin for the same quality stuff you can get at K mart at a 500% markup.

If your Outback travelling you have all your life in your vehicle, therefore you have to travel light, more so in a duel cab Defer due to the fact the "usable" space is a lot smaller than that available in a normal 110. After a few days of roughing it a $200 shirts or a $30 shirt will still smell like death, if you have enough water to launder it fine, otherwise turf it in a biohazard bin and go buy another. 6x throw away clothes = 1 $200 shirt;)

Yes I'm a stinking tight assed pom
