Defender aircon in County

I've fitted a 2000-ish TD5 defender aircon into an Isuzu County, but I'm not impressed with it's performance. I measured the air temp today (probe just inside the vent) with a thermocouple and got 8 degrees when he compressor was running, and 12 when compressor was not. If I turn the thermostat down any further the system ices over and stops working. The ambient air temp was 34 degrees and after half an hour of highway driving the temp in the car got down to a dazzling 29degrees:mad:

Surely you TD5 drivers out there don't put up with this performance!!!! Has anyone measured their aircon temps at the vent so I can compare?

Can anyone with a fender measure their aircon for me? I want to know if mine needs money spent on it or if it's operating at its potential:(

Even a few comments about how their aircon performs will help....

the thing doesnt get enough airflow to work at higher settings, pop one of the dash vents out and get it gassed properly.

(it also has to deal with the air intake being down in the passangers footwell which is normally about the hottest place in a landy)

Well mine is a 2003 TD5 with factory Air. It does look different to yours though, I seem to recall they went from a locally installed version to factory air in about 2003. Any way I'd say they would be mechanically similar. Ours works quite well, I've never measured the temp but it makes a noticeable difference when on. When I first had the vehicle it had a gas leak and worked as yours does, very poorly. They fixed that and it's been good since.

Recently a vent broke and fell out. Now the air flow is amazing, and the whole unit works much better. I'm tempted to try to find new better vents and install an extra one or two.

I should pull mine out of the box and install it. Maybe I wont be able to hear the front end vibration noise anymore.

I'm feeling your pain Pete, seems like we fix one noise or vibration only to discover another slightly quieter one...

SUCCESS!!!! I took out a couple of vents and the aircon is working like a gem!!!!!!!!!!! It now sits at 5 degrees and cools the inside nicely! If only I knew before driving across the Nullarbor! Now to work out how to make it look good with gaping holes...

you could always go for that "drilled" look. I originally bored an inch hole in mine to run a spot cooler for alex and it was in the process of doing that that I punched one of the vents out.

as I was short of time and care factor I chucked it in the back and forgot about it. The rest they say is history..
