I may have the oportunity to get work down in Melbourne, at box hill. Does anyone know how far it is from there to rural living and what sort of cost the land there is?

My only recollection of Melbourne is the Esplanard hotel in St Kilda, from about 25 years ago

From boxhill you can go north to eltham, Kangaroo ground, warrandyte, hurstbridge, wattleglen, st andrews, panton hill. Or go east to lilydale, yarraglen, coldstream, dixons creek - it really depends on your wallet.

Hmmm Box Hill - Rural Living.... OK rural as in how isolated?
From BH to somewhere like Warrandyte is maybe 30 mins, to somewhere like St Andrews - 40 but true rural (what I'd call rural) is probably further out - like Yea and that would be 1hr plus. As for land - no idea.(times are rough Peak Period travel times).
I suppose the 'rural' aspect is what you may need to compromise on - either less travel and live closer or more travel and have 'country life'.
Being on the west of the yarra :p the best side ;) maybe the 'eastern burbs' peoples will add there opinions and be able to give more accurate distances

I meant to add it depends on how rural you want, for acreage you'll want to go to at least kangaroo ground or yarraglen and out.

Where?
I think you may find its on the border of the next council ;) Same as Camberwell - the only pubs are in Hawthorn :( Or thats how it was when I miss-spent my youth out that way...

Box hill is not to bad these days. Still dry meaning BYO for restaurants only.

Living rural and working in box hill would mean you will be spending a fair bit of time in your car. I like the idea of rural living but can't deal with the traffic situation when getting to work.

Need to work on my retirement fund.:D

Its not that far, a lot easier than Eastern burbs to the city down the eastern carpark. Eltham to Boxhill would be no more than 25 mins and then maybe another 10-20 to get out further.

I'm in Blackburn south and thinking on doing the move to further out.

Biggest thing is cost and travel to/from work. They area has great schools and lots of nice open space for kids/pets.... if you have either.

Boxhill area is nice to live in..... so am torn between moving and staying.

If you want to chat or have a look around just PM me and we can hook up.

Working in Melbourne but living out side of it if I can. Everyone has to remember that the population of Parramatta is greater than the population of the entire Northern Territory including the Tiwi islands

Quite probably will be Brian but it is one of those things where if I dont do it I will always wonder if I could have.

also both Kathy and my parents are getting older, and we just dont get to see them living up here, where if we were down there it is only an hour flight to either parents in oposite directions. and cheap down there flights from here are exccy no matter where you go.

Have you thought of trying to lease a place for about a year,, gives you a good chance to look around and work things out with your own tilt on things.
If you cant lease a small farm, theres heap of agistment around Melb.

Crikey Mate, I'm a Melbourne boy, born and breed and I hate the **** hole.
Three days and counting, I'm back up to QLD and my house in Hervey Bay.
If the traffic is not enough to want to make you neck yourself, the weather will.
Best advice I or anyone else could give you would be, take some time to travel down to Melbourne and drive around some of the places mentioned and get a feel for the place.
Places like Yea, Marysville before the fires, Healsville, Black Spur, Reefton Spur are great and the Yarra Valley/Dandenong Ranges are beautiful but on the weekend the traffic can be horrendous getting there and back.
Then during the snow season on a Sunday arvo, the Melba Highway can be gridlocked.
Go for a look first Mate, thats the best thing you could do.
