Hi all,

Now that I seem to have reconciled my environmental concerns with my desire for a Freelander 2, do I need to run it in (when I get it)?

Is it necessary with modern engines?

Nope, just drive it.

Yes, you should run it in. The procedure is in the owners handbook.

Modern engines are built to tighter tolerances than ever before, so if anything, running in is more important than it was in the old days.

Once run in, it will feel a good bit more lively than when new.

Maybe it depends on what sort of running in you were thinking of.

If you think it means drive it at 50km/h for a while like your grandfather did when he bought his brand new Austin A40, maybe the answer is no.

If you mean treat it with some of the same sort of respect that you give the engine each morning until it gets up to operating temperature, the answer might be yes.

Don't have the handbook to hand, but it refers to the first 800 kms I think. Plus keeping speed below 110 kph. Not hard!

if it has the rite oil in the motor,, witch it will, just drive it normaly an dont flog it, the instructions in the book is there for land rover to cover there backs, so if somthing gose rong,, they say,,, did u run it in:(

for the first 1000k no going to full throttle nor full RPM, keep the speed under 100, dont lug the engine, dont let it idle excessivley, let it warm up with very gentle driving till the tempgauge is about mid range, dont keep the engine speed constant keep an eye on the oil.

for 1000-5000K its basically the same but you can be a little more assertive with the noisey pedal and brief forays up to near full load and full RPM are acceptable. avoid staying at constant speed for prolonged periods.

5000K oils and filter change then drive it more or less normally to 10,000Km then one more oil change and you're set.

summarising.

Nice gentle city driving with some light hill work, no towing and the occasional short trip on a free way untill about 5000K will see you right.

Im sure its all been posted up before.
