I think that what is "best" depends on the state of your knowledge and wallet!

If only one book, it would have to be the workshop manual. Following that I would get a parts manual - it goes way beyond finding parts numbers - it has pictures of how things go together, way beyond the detail in the Workshop manual.

Only after these would I get the restoration book and anything else I could find on Series 1. If you can find one, an owners manual is worth getting as well.

What John said. The parts books and owners manuals regularly appear on ebay and are available at swap meets. They vary enormously in price though.

Hi there

As what they said - I have a workshop manual (big green book) for the series one's and its quite good with good break down pictures.

Mine is always in the shed - on standby (but unable to locate at the moments - time for a clean up I think)

Well its helped me alot ........

The workshop manual and parts manual are still in print. It might be worthwhile looking for secondhand copies though. What model Series I are you restoring?

Aaron.

Just to clarify - the workshop manual you want is the factory manual for the model you are working on. There are non- factory manuals, for example I have an Autopress one, but these do not have anything like the detail of the factory manual, and cannot be looked on as a substitute for one.

G'day there

Have a look at a couple of the sites I have suggested in the 'downloadables' sticky thread.

I've got workshop manual and parts catalogues saved as pdf and print off relevant pages when I'm working on something or talking to suppliers about parts - write on them, greasy fingers, etc - throw away when finished.

Cheers

I have both... As someone else posted here... the official/original workshop repair manual I would recomend as it goes into detail. It is very useful for your friendly neighbourhood mechanic who is working on your Land Rover for you. And if you are technically inclined it will be a good source of information.

As to the restoration manual I got (about the same price) I found it usefull but a bit dissapointing in details. But still useful as it gives an indication on specific difficulties you can meet with a restoration (aged Land Rovers).

If you need to make a choice, I woulg go for the workshop repair manual. But I recomend to get both. And you can download the workshop repair manual for free mostly. (No need to buy on eBay).

Good luck
