I received my unit on Friday and have spent a most enjoyable weekend adding Oziexplorer.
I have not found a hack and even Oziexplorer say on their site the UBD does not run on CE.
Any clues if UBD can run on the GPS?
I have the melways maps in oziexplorer - but - what's the point? Ozi was never designed for you to nav street to street.
Use Igo8 for that. :cool:

I received my unit on Friday and have spent a most enjoyable weekend adding Oziexplorer.
I usually run a laptop with a 10.5" screen, Oziexplorer, Natmaps & UBD City & Regional maps and this would be used when we are on the road, but I wanted something for running around town and the odd occasion of having to go somewhere without the laptop.
So I bought a "Ranga GPS" :p and had intentions of running Oziexplorer with all the maps.
But no...this is not the case. Oziexplorer CE can run the Natmaps but it will not run the UBD City & Regional Maps. So my GPS unit is pointless:(

Why not use iGO8 for road navigation?

When I ordered my unit I asked for Australia Maps to be supplied and I didn't get a response. The unit has now turned up and it has US maps.
I have been searching for maps. Even the naviextras.com didn't have a Australia map.
Maybe I need to do some more searching.

Thank you for all your efforts Ranga.
Will look forward to your updated instructions.
7 inch didn't seem a lot until I got it!
Sure looks big. I think I will need a mount to fit it in the Defender. Would take up too much window space if fitted to the window with supplied kit I think.

Hi RaZz0R
Works well with iGo as expected.
I am looking at using a RAM Mount (http://www.ram-mount.com) to hold it. Most probably fix the Ram Mount to the left hand side of the console where the grab rail is fixed.
Still waiting to get "other" work done especially on the electrical side of things. Once the second battery and circuit breakers are installed I can look at doing some wiring for those units that will be hard wired in, like radios and some sockets.
The radios will be hard wired (no sockets needed) but the navigation system will need sockets (or perhaps inline plugs) for power and rear camera etc.
Which reminds me:
Ranga... have you been able to find time to update your files yet? In my case of course, to be able to get OziExplorer to run off the 7" unit:

Well, I'm off and running and this unit is just a little fun.
I am having problems getting the power off button to work.
This is the info:
#Power Off
ICONXPBUTTON
x = 425
y = 5
NewIni= \ResidentFlash2\YFAP30\PowerOff.exe
SizeNormal = 48
SizePushed = 48
ScaleAlpha = 100
IconNormal = ..\Icons\Power-Off.ico
ScaleAlpha = 100
IconPushed = ..\Power-Off.ico
Now...I have not done a firmware upgrade as I am running WinCE 6. I also have not looked into the ResidentFlash2 change as I believe that I could brick the unit if so.
So how do I have a functional power off button?

My problem is with Oziexplorer. I have Ozi CE 1.12.0 and 1.12.3 on SD, but when I attempt to install them, I get the message...... Oziexplorer CE 1.12.0 is not a valid Windows CE application.
Can anyone suggest what the problem might be.

Hi guys, I think I need some help.
I got my first Ranga GPS back in April and managed to convert it and been working great. So great I thought I'll get the wife one. I tried to convert it like the first one but the menu system was different. I later found out it was running CE6.
I got through most of the GPS Menu update but locked up and the unit comes up with an error. When I turn it on it comes up with the background picture with an error on it. APPLICATION ERROR. NOT FOUND APPLICATION. Please Install It From SD/MMC.
I can't get it to go past this spot or get access the SD/MMC or any menus. I put my card out of the working GPS in but still no good. I put the card out of the faulty GPS into mine and works. I think the faulty GPS is needing a program I don't have. does anyone have any suggestions or have I bricked the GPS.

Thats the same unit as mine & it runs CE6.

I've been meaning to update my instructions and files for a while now, to suit both size units and both Windows CE 5 and 6.
I'll endeavour to do this next week.
The menu will work with both versions of CE, but will need to be resized to suit the size of the GPS.
Hi Ranga.
Have you been able to update your instructions yet?

"run the install from CE explorer" :confused:
That's why I am stuck and was hoping for those instructions.
Is it simple to explain how I access "CE explorer"? Do I have the card in the gps to do that?
Assuming I can install it, how do I run it each time? i.e. there is an icon for iGo but obviously not for OziExplorer.

Anyhow, I have "found" this site:

And a search of that sites forum for the 7" unit suggests using the first menu from the downloads page.
And there is instructions on how to install OziExplorer which with iGo is all I want :)
So I will try that. Busy all day tomorrow so will have to wait a day or so.

Welcome to GPSUNLOCK.NET! (http://gpsunlock.net/PageHowTo.html)
Think of it like this - Windows CE is a cut down version of winxp that runs the hardware for your GPS & the menu's - it has explorer just like your actual PC - so run explorer.exe
The install is the file you download (The actual program) and you run that program on the GPS.
Sounds like you have alot to read & learn ;) good luck with it.

I take it from this that you have installed Mio pocket onto the Ranga gps?
I see in Mio pocket readme file http://www.gpspassion.com/upload2/MioPocket%20Readme.html#5.1 that they warn against installing it to "...obscure GPS devices (especially no-name Chinese GPS devices)..." or risk permanently bricking it.
I like what I see with Mio pocket, but not confident about installing it.
Any tips?

yes I have it on my GPS.. works ok - but 128mb of ram would be better.
You have to remember all these units run winCE in the back ground. When I downloaded the install files there was a full install guide. In short - Wince loads what ever menu you want, installing mio pocket pretty much puts it self as the menu to load instead of the normal one, I found the wince registry setting for the menu & found them numbered like 00 = default menu, 01 = mio pocket would tell it to load the default menu & ignore mio - setting mio to 00 would tell wince to load mio pocket as the default. Setting the unit to start active sync when ever USB was connected is the fail safe as then you can edit the Windows CE (wince) registry & change what menu is loading, this is what I did & then launch mio pocket off the default menu - this was my way of setting it up in a fail-safe kinda way so it didn't brick it - you can pretty much only brick it if you screw up the firmware or can't get in to a menu\boot loader & can't get active sync going. Need to stuff it pretty bad ;)

From the link in my post:

Step 1)
When your new GPS unit arrives, it will probably have an old version of firmware on it. Before you continue onto the
next steps you must update this firmware.
(http://www.mediafire.com/'dnzoxztthun)I DID NOT UPDATE THE FIRMWARE
Step 2)
Now you can install my new "GPS Menu" program. This is the one that allows you to launch your multiple
pre-purchased GPS programs (like TomTom and Ozi) / WindowsCE / Games / Apps etc...
All of the instructions are in the READ ME Text file included.

Noogie,
I had a play with the Garmin 1490T yesterday. Great road GPS but the 4wd maps were average to say the least. As a test I looked at Fraser Is. It showed the island ok but no tracks where I know there's major tracks.
Below is a standard map from shonkymaps (which will load onto a Garmin no problems). None of these tracks showed up on the 1490T loaded with Garmins 4WD maps.

I received on of these in the post yesterday DealExtreme: $107.00 6" LCD Windows CE 6.0 Core 500MHz GPS Navigator w/FM Transmitter + Built-in 4GB Memory USA Map (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.37914) to have a tinker with.
Quite a nice unit, very well presented. Lovely big, clear screen.
iGO8 worked pretty well, after updating the maps. Whilst you can't add extra icons on the menu (without some coding), you can link to "Favourites". I did this to enable opening up OziExporerCE, which worked OK.
The touch screen is ok, but not very accurate or sensitive. Even though I calibrated it, a quite a few times it was difficult selecting smaller buttons, especiaaly in Ozi. One thing I noticed, and didn't really like, was how small the menu bar and buttons appeared. The maps showed up full-screen though, and looked good on the 800x480 resolution.
The other issue was the lack of AV-in, meaning the inability to use a reversing camera. This was a deal-breaker for me, and hence I've already moved the unit on to a mate who mostly wante do use it on-road, for which it would be fine.
Anyway, thought I'd give a quick review for anyone looking at getting one. Not a bad unit at all, but didn't suit my needs.

So Ranga - would that model be ok for just running iGo and Ozi? That's all I need it for... already have rear camera-ready DVD head unit in dash.
Thanks, Rob.

Should work fine, except I wasn't really happy with the screen sensitivity. Made it a bit hard to operate the menu in Ozi. Otherwise, very nice unit to look at, and nice, big screen.

They usually take around 2 weeks to ship, so I wouldn't worry too much yet.
You should have no problem playing music from an SD card via the transmitter. The only issue I've had is some models have a limit on how many songs they can queue up (~256 from memory).

Hi Ranga,
Since you did your great work on my GPS, I have gathered enough knowledge to add to the new menu page with a couple of new GPS applications I have aquired.
My problem is that I can't find the icon file to use on the menu page for NDrive, Navigon or Sygic applications. I have googled into many sites to find them without success.
I suppose I could use any old icon, but the authentic ones would be good just for looks.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced GPS unit which can be mounted within the hole where the factory GPS unit fits on a D3? (Kenwood is too expensive)
The 7" units are too big but it looks as though some of the 6 - 6.2" might fit reasonably snugly. The biggest problem seems to be that all those I have seen on ebay etc have the power input plug into the edge of the unit rather than from the back which would be best for a semi-permanent mounting. Also if the plug is on the edge it makes the unit as installed very much wider.
The Garmin 1490T (5") would fit easily and has rear power input but I would prefer a cheaper solution and bigger screen.
Any suggestions?

Hi all,
I bought a 7" unit from alibaba the otherday and have set most of it up thanks to help from Ranga and rigidij (thanks boys)
unit link - https://escrow.alibaba.com/order/product_snap_shot_detail.htm?order_id=1000656961
Ozi works well, but stuffed if i can get Igo to work off the SD card.
Ranga - ill try your version when it arrives.
Ive modified the gps.ini and well as the sys.ini to point at the app. I did read that i needed to rename the configuration.dat in the IGO folder to IGO.exe but no luck with that either
Igo is a late version for Win mobile 8.3.4xxx something with R17 maps.
Has anyone successfully added Igo to this type of unit (chinese JONDA K772):confused:

I've never opened up a GPS so can't swear by this but I'd imagine if you are a little handy with electronics (or know someone who is!) it wouldn't be too difficult to route the power through the back instead of the side.
Would all depend on where everything is in the unit though.

Hi All,
Im deciding which Ranga unit to get to run OZI and turn X turn nav also. We will be using it for a year around OZ in 2011.
DX now have a few 6 inch GPS units, including 2 new ones running CE5. (Models 6001 and 6002)
They have 800 X 480 screens.
Anyone had any experience with these ?
Is the Mediatek.MT3551 CPU compatible with OZI ?
Thanks for your help.

The main thing is you need to be able to read it with some light behind you / reflectingoff the screen. Ranga showed me a 7" one which was RUBBISH in that department so I stuck with the smaller one - which was still bigger than my old HEMA unit.

I noticed your modified GPS's offer on the site and it sounds like you've done some of the syuff I'd like to do. You also mention a How To. Did that ever happen?
Wish list changes are: Seperate Icon for Oziexpoler, Car Icon in Igo8 instead of arrow(Car bmps are on card), ability to play music while nav sotware is going.
Any tips to help start me off would be great.

Hi Ranga,
you certainly started a very interesting and worthwhile thread that is still going. I have been reading and following most of the posts and am coming to the time I want to do something.
There have been a number of units of different sizes that other members have bought over the last 12 months so now I would like to know which unit is the best value from what is now available and do your mods work on the unit and/or are you still prepared to do the mods if I bring the unit to you? :confused:
I am primarily interested in the 5" units as the larger ones are more suitable for in dash installation.
I am also after one with AV input suitable for reversing camera.
So comments please from anyone who is currently looking at these units.

As well as looking at value for money, it is probably important to consider which model will suit your particular needs. I am not thinking of the technical capabilities of the equipment, but just its physical size.
As one of those who bought the original 5" model, I am convinced that it is the right size for me. I think that my 64 year old eyes would probably struggle with a smaller screen. In fact after installing a new skin for Igo8, I modified a couple of files so that street names and other text such as speed and distance to destination appeared in larger text.
In the two vehicles in which I use the GPS, I would expect that a larger unit would be more difficult to mount unobtrusively. I might find room for a 6", but just can't envisage a 7" GPS on my dashboard.
The 5" unit seems to be a good size for me.

IMHO the units linked in my first post are tried and tested. They are pretty robust, have a bright screen that's big enough for most, and are now pretty cheap at ~$90.
Note that the bigger units have a higher resolution, meaning rather than everything in the nav software being bigger, it sometimes mean you just fit more on them. Hence, they're probably no better for those with poorer eyesight, only those who want to see more at once.
I'm no longer doing DVDs or readmes - too many irons in the fire for me. However, send me your unit or at least an 8GB SD card and I'll happily mod them for you or copy the files you need. Also, include a self-addressed post pack. You might think this is slower than me sending you a DVD, but those who've had to wait will attest to the contrary! I can also ensure that everything is working if you send me your GPS. On the other hand, those who've sent me there unit will confirm that I have a quick turnaround, usually within a couple of days (probably get the guilts looking at a unit sitting on my desk!). Finally, I'm more than happy to those who are happy to subscribe to AULRO ;)
Also, some others on here have gotten pretty handy at doing these, so might be convinced to help other subscribers.

Ranga - I can support your view about the 5" model - it biggest downfall is the weak mounting suction cap that shakes the GPS when offroad but I have modified my bracket with a better suction cap ($10) mated to the bracket that the GPS sits in.
However having been bounced around the floor of my 101 offroad my unit is coming the end of its useful life and will get another of the same for the 101 (I guess I can program it from your disk).
However I also want to get one for my RRS and about 6" is the ideal size to fit where the original fit GPS goes. Do you have a recommended 6" version that will be programmable via your disk.
Thanks

If you just want iGo (or similar) the 5" units are ideal. I have one in my car.
For the Defender I wanted OziExplorer and found the 5" too small, but that was just my opinion. Other people run Ozi OK.
I use the 7" one in the Defender. Use iGo and Ozi.
Mounted it using a Ram Mount.

The road navigation software (iGO) can do it, provided there are roads to get there. When off-road, OziExplorer can add a waypoint, but won't exactly tell you to turn left/right etc, but simply tell you which direction the waypoint is, because generally it doesn't know the route to take. AFAIK!

Does the 5" unit that Ranga originally recommended (or at least the latest version of it) have AV in suitable for connecting a reversing camera. Looking at the photos on the DX site for variious models it would appear to have an AV in port, but it is not labeled as such, whereas other models have a label in the photos to indicate the AV in.
Has anyone asked DX to supply the unit with Australian maps instead of the US?

To be honest, the 5" is fine for on-road use, and adequate for off-road, but with the raft of new tablet PC's coming out this year, I think I'll be upgrading to one of those for off-road and touring. It has been about 18 months since we got our GPSs so I guess it is time to do some upgrading.
The 5" version I have works really well and lives in my 101 where it has been bounced around a bit and has done more than has been expected of it but some upgrades of the software would be nice. I have upgraded Oziexplorer CE to the latest version and would also like to up grade Tom Tom and IGO
I have IG08 (version 1.0) so is it worth upgrading to a another version etc. If yes where would I find it.
Maps for IGO - have looked at GPS Underground :: Your Tracks Guide (http://gpsunderground.com/forum/) but that site is complex and the few links I have tried have not worked. What are the latest files I should be looking to update Maps, POIs, Safety Cameras etc. Igo is good to use but the maps I have are now quite out of date.
Ditto for Tom Tom - I have no idea what version I have and I cannot find where the maps are stored (can someone tell what folder they live in). The Tom Tom maps I have are much more up to date than the Igo8 ones but are also getting a little out of date.
Any pointers or links in GPS underground or elsewhere that might be helpful would be appreciated.

iPad and iPhones use Assisted-GP which uses the location of phone towers to increase the speed and accuracy of the GPS.
So they can work without Mobile Phone reception but they are quicker with it.

The recommended 5" gps does work Ok with AV in from a reversing camera. If it doesn't work first time persist with it as mine took a little while to work but is great now.
I also bought the recommended reversing camera form the same site.
Well I finally got the DX GPS unit and have it running thanks to Ranga but I am having a bit of trouble hooking up the wireless reversing camera. It was working at first but then it doesn't want to go. Not sure if it is something to do with the cables or I am expecting it to transmit too far. The camera is at the back of my caravan so that would make it about 10 metres between the transmitter and the 12v plug/receiver. Or perhaps it doesn't like to be on continuously.
Has anyone else experienced this and what is the fix?:confused:

I would have thought that the distance is too far - the signal is being lost when travelling through the metal of the caravan and then the car.
It works Ok on my 101 I have set up (temporarily) the transmitter inside so it is line of site to the receiver so mine works OK.
My brother put a wireless system on his Hilux and it would not work - he converted it to a wired system and works OK.
So it depends on the car and the shielding it has in it.

For those looking for a 7" solution, I notice the Samsung Galaxy Tab is now only $360 at JB Hifi and ~$410 at Telstra shops.
They're a lovely little unit, and come with Navigon nav software already installed with Aussie maps. They also do 3G for internet and can even make phone calls (although you'd only want to do it handsfree via bluetooth).
OziExplorer has an Android alpha version. Not sure if it's going to make it into production, but here's hoping it does or something else comes along.
Unfortunately, the only thing missing at this stage that I can see is compatibility with a rear view camera. I'll keep my finger on the pulse and keep you updated on this front.

Has anyone put one of the 5" or 6" models flush inside the D3 cubby hole? Size wise looks like they fit but not sure if the cables cause a problem (I want to run them behind the unit and out of sight).
How is reception if I recess it into the cubbyhole (bit average I'd recon)

Not sure about fitting, but I know Weeds has a repater type gadget in his car to get a better signal to his old Garmin or Navman.

The original unit is US$86.91 so a bit cheaper in AUD$ now at about 1.02 paypal exchange rate. I've ordered one now so a week or two wait I guess.
Hoping to hook this up to a reversing cam and use for Nav. I've done the Aux input mod on my D3 so also have a fairly easy option to run run the audio from the unit to the stereo.
A couple of questions...
I notice it ships with a 2GB SD card, I assume I should get a 8GB card to hold extra map data, software and music?
Is there a current reliable image I can download onto the SD card?
Do I need to flash the actual unit itself?
I aslo intend to hardwire this into a permanent on 12v feed. Does the unit go to sleep if I just leave it powered on all the time or can I set it up to sleep via a touch icon on the unit?

If you want heaps of maps, get at least a 4GB, but preferably an 8GB card.
I can hook you up with all the software you need.
There's no need to flash WinCE6 deveices (what your's almost certainly will be).
AFAIK it won't automatically sleep, but gives you the option of sleep or shut down when you hit the power button.

No idea really, but I doubt the on-road maps would work. Not sure about the off-road maps either, but Oziexplorer can load plenty of different map types.
Never mind this though - there are other options for road and off-orad mapping. ;)

I have the same software, which is for the magellan units and thought along the same lines, however after a bit of research on the internet a while back it seems that it is not possible.
The natmap and other smaller scale maps on ozi explorer are pretty good, although some of the 1/25000 maps I have are WAY out of date. I like the navigation you can do your self rather than the turn by turn voice nav stuff.
When i got my grey scale screen magellan with the offroad maps in about 2003/4 I thought it was the bees knees and cost me near a grand! Now you can by one of the windows ce units with a 7inch screen and colour for $100!

Just having a play with the unit now..
Managed to find the residentflash2 hidden folder and managed to back it up. You need to go into file manager on the GPS and copy it to the SD card. Problem with this is that the menu items are in Chinese. Would be nice to get them in English.
Is there anyneed to upgrade the firmware? The version it lists is
ROM 82AV6.0D09M21401A.8.2
Software Ver V3.6.E93.10.21
OEM info : YFAtlas4
also..if updating the splash screen, the file name needs to be Logo82a4.bmp for devices with 82AV6 rom.

After having played with the DX for a couple of days now
- no need to flash the unit as Ranga suggest earlier as you can get to CE via a menu option
- not sure yet if I can or need to update the menu, they are ugly but work..I'd be happy just updating the backgrounds.
- loaded oziexplorerce 2.33a but despite it accepting my username and code it doesn't keep the setting. Googling finds some complex solutions, not sure why it isn't working on my unit.

which unit did you end up getting? Does it have AV-in? I notice the 6" listed above doesn't.

I have one of their wireless versions - doesn't really work as the wireless signal is too weak to cut through all the metal - an using on my 101 so less metal and works OK - will not work on the RRS.
You need PAL.
My 5" gps has AV in and switches automatically when the camera comes on.

I got the 5" unit listed in post #1.
This is now coming loaded with Windows CE 6.0. The unit I got does have an AV in although the specs don't list it.
I got a PAL reversing camera off ebay that lists for a D3 and fits in the number plate light area quite neatly.
I've just spent the last 3 hours installing it and it seems to work OK. Lots of work removing trims, threading wires etc. for a neat job and also making sure connections were solid and working.
Minor annoyance...image is reversed
Some things to note...
AV in on these units is a 4 pole 2.5mm plug. For a reversing camera to work you need to wire the 2.5mm plug as follows
tip - not used (probably left or right audio)
next - not used (probably left or right audio)
next - video
next - ground
I havent got a RCA to 4 pole 2.5mm cable so will need to mod an existing cable.

So, it's the same as turning your head around and looking, instead of looking in the mirror. Without having one fitted, I can't say which I'd rather, but probably reversed like a mirror I spose.

Just wondering which reversing cameras people have used with Ranga's GPS units? I looked at a couple on DX but not sure which is the best one. I was probably looking at a wired one, and I believe i would have to tap into the reversing lights in order to get it to go on automatically when reversing, then wire it back through the car to the GPS unit. Correct?

I'm still tinkering with the unit and found a solution to the problem where igo 8 will freeze if you put the unit into sleep mode while igo is running.
If you have your device on ignition switched power (eg. a 12v ignition switched socket that is only active when the ignition is on) you can add the following lines in /iGO8/sys.txt.
iGO won't shutdown the device automatically when turning off the ignition but if you are running igo, pressing the on off button and selecting sleep won't cause the mapping to freeze up. Should work the same for a always on 12v connection (the red light will remain on though)
[interface]
shutdown_time=0
[power]
skip_resume_process=1
skip_suspend_process=1
powermgm_state=0
Ideally I'd like to still have the unit auto shutoff when power is cut but not cause the mapping to freeze. The shutdown_time=0 turns off the auto shutdown.. more investigation needed.

Hi all,
I just received back from Ranga my GPS (thanks for the help), however I am having one problem.
Every time I turn it back on it will not pick up satellites ? I have to go to settings/nav and check the auto nav enable tab, after which time it seems to start communication with them, once going it works fine.
I assume there is an easier way and have this auto started when turning it on.
Anyone give me some pointers please.

I changed to igo Primo and it seems much more stable.
I ended up running the device off my 2nd battery and connected it via a relay using the 12v socket wire for the centre console (2nd row) as the control feed. Ran the power wiring and reverse camera wiring through the centre console, behind the radio fascia and drilled a small hole in the cubby hole for the wires. Built a wood surround for the unit (covered in black duct tape) and mounted it in the cubby hole nice and snug.
I need to spend a bit more time making a more "factory" looking surround. I had to leave some space so I could get my finger to the on/off button as I still need to turn it on manually.
I haven't been able to find a way yet of turning the unit on when it detects power and not quite prepared yet to open the unit an bypass the switch.
Overall, an excellent unit and more than happy just using it as a GPS and reverse camera. Maybe one day I'll look to fit a 7" unit in there....

Hi ashes,
I had a bit of trouble running Primo.
The maps where slow to update in normal destination mode, and there wasn't quite enough memory to run the Primo music feature and maps at the same time.
Perhaps there is a fix I don't know about.
Glad to hear that some work okay.
I wouldn't be too nervous about pulling the back off, it's no big deal. I've had the back off mine a few times.
The battery life is starting to annoy me at the moment, and I am looking to replace it. I haven't heard of anyone doing this yet, but it can't be too hard to find a replacement battery.
The battery seems to take only a few minutes to fully charge, then just a few seconds to fully discharge. I don't know if the cause is a software problem, the charging circuit, or the battery itself. Perhaps others have solved this issue.
The only other issue I have is that the Route66 program has no exit function, so you need to reset the unit to close it. I have found mention of a couple of software fixes, but have had no success so far.
Apart from those minor issues, all good.:D
I can't believe the price of these things, you really can't go wrong for the price.

The auto turn on when ignition is switch on isn't really annoying me but would be nice to have it as an option. It would probably be just as annoying for the unit to turn on every time you start the car as it isn't always used anyway. Having it come on automatically though when there is an AV signal from the reverse camera would be brilliant..relay..momentary on circuit..hmmm....maybe a project f0r a wet weekend...

Do any of these have a mapping system that is heads and shoulders over the other? I have a Garmin in my D3 but it only has the standard maps.
I would also like your opinion regarding the ability of these to stand up to heat, vibration and possibly (probably) dust, I am contemplating a Defender

Without having seen either in the flesh, I can't make a call. I notice the screens are older resistive technology (you have to press on the screen, as opposed to lightly touching them). Not a huge deal, except the newer capacitive screens are much nicer.
If it were me, I'd be looking around for a more all-round tablet, making sure it has a GPS. You might pay a little more, but it will probably have higher specs and the ability to use it for more than just a GPS.
Having said that, both of those you linked are probably fine if you only want to use them as a GPS.

I have had one for a while and they are pretty good, Mine has nearly 16 GB of ozi explorer maps on a SD card, Problem is when you get too many maps it slows it down and sometimes freezes the GPS. Solution is to get one of the high speed cards that are used for SLR cameras. The processors in the later ones may be a bit faster?

I still like these units even though a few people think that an Ipad with google maps is better for off road navigation. I have not used google maps for this. Any comments, experiance of this?
There is no ozi explorer app yet for Ipad but there is for android type apparently.
The biggest advantage with these units is that you can leave them on your dash and if someone does nick it you have lost only $100. I wouldnt leave an Ipad on my dash and I would probably forget to take it anyway.
The maps for ozi explorer are pretty dated with many roads not on them, but sometimes this is good as i like to follow abandoned railway formations and bush tracks and later maps sometimes dont show them. I have the 25k QLD sunmap series and a lot of 100k nation wide maps as well as the 250k natmap and the hema ones. Havent got any 25k NSW,VIC ones yet but I believe they are available.
Mine is quite an old unit (2 years) and is pretty slow when you try and scroll, Some of the newer ones on deals extreme have a 1gb processor so they should be really fast but they dont have AV in which seams to be a backwards step. The one in the post above has a 533mhz processor which I would be interested in knowing how that goes.
