Plastic radiator plug has cracked and fallen in on therm hous. 3oo tdi

Need I clean the shards out, will they block/get stuck sumwhere?

I would remove the thermostat water neck, and the thermostat and then you will be able to get the bits out. They CAN get stuck in the thermostat and cause it to stick open.

Was this the cause of the water loss?

The plastic floats ...

Keep topping up and then squeezing top radiator hose to eject the water and plastic ....

repeat....

repeat....

repeat....

etc. ...
