The good oil

My workshop and instruction manuals list a whole range of lubricants that no longer exist. What do others currently use (spec/rating and brands) for engine, transmission, diffs/axles etc?

Well, I, myself, personally,;) in the engine am currently using Penrite HPR 40, as it's thick doesn't run out on the ground as quickly :D and the plugs don't oil up. Gearbox etc Castrol 80/90. That's in the S1 88" BTW.

The engine oil you use should match viscosity with that specified - the rest of the specifications for the oil will be exceeded by a wide margin with anything you can buy today.

So this would be good for mine as well (S1,1958,88",2.0 Petrol, 12V)?

How often do you drive it and would that influence matters? Mine is leaking a little now and then of course,... someone recomended replacing gaskets... What was the original oil viscosity specification ?
A lot of those older engines only ran SAE30 or so way back when.

And if I could find something that wont oil the plugs up, I would use that.

Is it going down the valve guides or past the rings ?
A hotter plug could help too.

I suppose that's what that viscosity oil is designed for, it just pains me to think how hard the little oil pump has to work to push grease through the galleries..... :twisted:

If your plugs are oiling up replace them with the next hotter available plugs. Did this on the S1 I owned. Worked quite well, but remember to refit the right heat range when you fix the oil problem. I reringed mine in Sydney, and started getting severe preignition near Dalby on my way back to Longreach. The centre electrodes had worn away to points. Fortunately I still had my old plugs in the toolbox....

I have already gone to the next hotter plug........'twas the first thing I did, although I was going by the plug which was already there, as nowhere in any of my publications, indicates which plug to use.

The engine could probably do with an overhaul, but it still runs very well, after all we did a 120mile run on the weekend and he ran beautifully.
