It seems like the failure of these mirrors is quite common so as mine was faulty I thought I would see if I could make it usable again. The mirror was brown in most parts and foggy looking + did not change in any way. I took it off, opened it up and found the mirror is fronted by another piece of clear glass with an oily fluid sealed in between the two. I think the seal had given up and some oil had escaped rendering it useless. I managed to carefully prise the two pieces of glass apart, cleaned off the oil then refitted using the mirror glass only, discarding the clear glass.
Now at least the mirror is perfect although it does not dip, a function I can quite easily live without.

The D2 uses the same mirror mount so that's another option if your's dies.

If you do start seeing the liquid in your mirror, remove it straight away. I don't know what it is but it's very corrosive to the radio & HEVAC controls.

Thanks SCouse... mine died and I bought a reverse camera clip on mirror for $120 off e-bay. However, had not bothered to empty remaining goo out of it. Will do ASAP.

FYI, the camera-screen combo is a really good solution especially for parking and hitching trailers (as well as the obvious safety benefits). It will also take a couple of other video inputs so perhaps, when I get round to it, a camera might end up going on the camper trailer!

did you go for this one? Reversing Camera (http://paulp38a.com/gallery/v/99RR/reversing_camera/)

I'm thinking that the second video input will be useful for a forward facing camera in line with the front diff for off-road use

I dont know how you split it apart, the goo that leaked out of one of mine, seems to have solidified like araldite. I have been very lucky with my p38s, out of the 8 cars that i have owned, only 1 had a dud auto mirror.

Like scouce said, a d2 mirror is the same. So is the D1 after 1996.

The bosch p38s (post 99) also share the auto mirrors with several bmw models.

Nah, I got this one as it only displays on half the mirror so you still have the ability to use it as a mirror whilst watching the images:

well yeah, I have been day dreaming on it since getting it in the mail and like the idea of a few wireless pinhole digital cameras in various locations around the vehicle transmitting to the thing with a switching mech that can select beyond the 2 wired inputs... but that just seems a little too silly and way beyond my relatively meager technical abilities! Especially when I havent even fitted the thing yet!!!

The penny drops..................................is this why the front of my wireless looks like this ?

Is it actually possible to fix the mirror properly or get a replacement or are they all like this ?

I came across this whilst looking into getting mine repaired:

Auto Dimming Rearview Mirror Replacement - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum (http://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-17/auto-dimming-rearview-mirror-replacement-17719/)

I'll look into Sybesma's Electronics repairs and get back to you. Services Sybesma's Electronics (http://sybesmas.com/site/services/)

Might also be worth doing a search on here as I have a dim memory that this subject has been visited before. And something about a Commodore mirror fitting. But then my memory cells may be playing tricks.

You're right, someone once posted that a Holden Senator mirror is a straight sway and had cheaply from the wreckers, I just don't recall the model.

Your memory is working fine! :D

I've received a reply. Exxy! My highlighting.

Thank you for the inquiry. The cost for repair is $97 (including shipping/handling) or exchange (if available) is $107 (includes pre-paid return label to return defective core). Customers in Canada will be charged $120 (USD) and all other international repairs $175(USD).

**For international customers please note that your country may have additional surcharge fees upon the return of your product. These charges are not included in the price above and will not be paid by Sybesma’s Electronics**

If you would like to send pictures of your mirror, we will gladly see if an exchange is available. Your mirror needs to be removed from the windshield and the following info is needed:
• Front view of the mirror
• Back view of the mirror
• Picture of the mounting bracket
• Picture of the plug/wires (Please make sure we can see the pin holes and all colored wires)

The other option we offer is a repair/return. If we do not have the plastics in house to build you a mirror as a pre-exchange, or you would prefer your original mirror repaired and sent back, you may send it into us, we will gladly exchange out the defective glass cell. Please be advised that in order to do this we must open the plastics in your mirror. In the rare instance your plastics break beyond repair, Sybesma's will make every effort to find a comparable replacement but no guarantees are made. Payment is made prior to repair.

Also, be advised that we are unable to test the operations in the home link feature, auto head lamps and rain sensor, so your mirror may or may not have this as an operable function upon completion of the repair. If unit does break, $15 will be retained as a bench fee and the remaining refunded. (If you would like your mirror shipped back, an additional shipping/handling for charges will apply)

Please send your mirror along with your name/address/phone/credit card number stating you would like the mirror repaired and returned to the address below. If you prefer not to include your card number we will contact you via phone/email once the unit is received. After payment is made the typical turnaround time is 3-4 business days for the unit to be back in route to you.

PLEASE NOTE :
• We no longer carry glass cells that support the slider button auto dim feature, or for the Mitsubishi Spyder as they are unavailable to us.
• Our program is for Magna Donnelly and Gentex made mirrors only (it will be the mirror owners responsibility to pay for return shipping if the mirror sent in is not from one of these manufacturers)

***We request you DO NOT send in any additional plastics with your mirror (i.e. trim pieces, pins etc.) Your fully assembled mirror the only item needed. Sybesma’s Electronics will not be liable for any lost pieces***

I think i will pick up a Disco II manual mirror and fit that, which I assume I can do without destroying the wiring for the auto mirror.

That will keep my almost immaculate interior safe from the dreaded corrosive goo until I send my mirror to the septics for repair

I had long forgotten about this problem as my fix has been permanent and free. I have never given a second thought to the dim feature now being missing.
Would be good to find a free replacement could be had under guarantee though. Mine might not meet the guarantee criteria now.

Hi

Fitted a Disco 2 mirror in a couple of minutes, sweet as a nut

No answer from Magna Donelly, but that doesn't surprise me !
