View Full Version : Engine governor for compressor

Hi Guys,

I am in the process of installing an engine driven compressor unit into the landy so I can run air tools. As the compressor does not produce great air flow at idle I want to be able to keep the engine revs up a little when the compressor is engaged.

The idea I had was to have a short throw solenoid as part of the idle adjustment screw on the injector pump (isuzu engine) the solenoid would be engaged when ever the compressor clutch is engaged increasing the RPM when ever the compressor is pumping. I would also install a micro switch into the hand brake so the solenoid is disabled when ever the handbrake is off.

Dose anybody have any ideas on such a system or have a better way of governing the engine? Or am I just being over the top?

Cheers
Paul

if you really want to do a proper job fit a short throw air piston with a significant return spring so that as pressure drops the spring pulls piston back in.

hook that up to one end of a push bike brake cable and route that down to the normal position for the hand throttle on the accelerator pedal.

less air pressure means more noise. Simple.

the easiest solution is to just fit a hand throttle and set that when you want to use the compressed air

the cheapest solution is to open the throttle and then put a coin (usually a 20c piece) between the throttle arm and the idle set screw

the most annoying solution is to chuck the appy or TA in the drivers seat and tell him to "apply a little throttle when the compressor kicks in and back off when it stops"

The air piston is a good idea Dave, It might be a bit hard to have a safety system to disable it when the vehicle is being driven ( don't really like the idea of having the governor take over when idling along in traffic ) I still might muck around with the idea, it would be a bit more water proof than an electrical system.

You missed one method of auto throttle Dave, the random heavy object placed carefully on accelerator pedal :D
