Series 2 and 3 hinges

Will the later square hinges off a Series 3 replace the Series 2 sticking out type hinges?

If they do, I can use the hinge mounted mirrors, which are better than the original wing mounted round mirrors.

I had a wander around the Land Rovers at the Great British Day at Parramatta today, and I don't think think there were 2 Series 1/2 vehicles with the same mirror setup there.

G'day All, I'm fairly certain that they will interchange Series 3 type onto a S2A, but the S2A type will not go onto a S3.
They both use 5/16" UNF thread form, the S3 has Phillips No3 screws with 5/16"UNF thread, the S2A uses 5/16" UNF hex bolts, hope thats of some help cheers Dennis:angel:

they fit both ways but going later to earlier needs a little more involvement but its achievable.


I prefer the IIa hinge as it gives you an extra place to tie a swag off to.

As Dave says, they are a straight swap. Worth noting however that a significant difference is that the hinge axis on the 2a is vertical, where with the Series 3/90/110/Defender hinges it is inclined inward so that on level ground the doors will automatically shut.

Outside mirrors standard on Series 1/2 were a convex mirror on the front of the mudguard. These were not very effective and were very vulnerable, and were often replaced with various alternatives. (Actually most Series 1 would not have had an outside mirror as they were not required, and very few Series 1-2 would have had both sides, although these were listed as standard for the 2a)

By late Series 2a army Landrovers had mirror arms mounted on the windscreen hinges, and these tend to be satisfactory. Another type that was, I think, an aftermarket one, used a special arm that replaced the pin on the top hinge, and these can also be satisfactory.

My SII had the round mirrors on the mudguards - both sides. As useful as an ashtray on a motorbike. It was probably one of those you saw at the ABD. I took the mirrors off and replaced them with aftermarket mirrors which are attached to the pivot point where the windscreen is. Driver's side is 100% but can't seem to get the nearside sorted. Not original, but at least I have better vision...

Yes all the Series 3 and later hinges will fit. Initially there was a Series 3 hinge mounted mirror available as an accessory but the best are those that are drilled for the later mirror mountings (County and Defender). As John said the set bolts are countersunk into the hinges so you need to get them also.

You must fit a flat mirror to the driver's side but a convex mirror on the passenger's side gives you the best setup.

Adjust the LH mirror so you are looking at it through the windscreen - I found that works best.

My 2a has a windscreen hinge mounted arm on the drivers side, not sure if it is any good as only put a mirror on it yesterday and can't see out my window :eek: but it may be another option if they are available.
