View Full Version : Pinzgauer - 101

Last week when I was in Newcastle with my 101, I managed to visit Grover 98 (James) and his Dad to have a look at their 4x4 Pinzgauer and work in progress Haflingers.
On outwards appearance the 101 and Pinzgauer look to be similar vehicles but in reality they are very much different.
Firstly the 101 is very much a much larger vehicle with a bigger wheelbase, engine and payload. The Pinzgauer is certainly more sophisticated with a more integrated approach to its construction and fittings and suspension systems. Despite the difference in physical size the Pinz and the 101 are within a few kilos of each other when empty - 1950kg
Where the 101 has a basic ladder chassis, parabolic springs over the sals axles, the Pinz has a backbone chassis, independent suspension, coil springs but importantly portal axles. The result is that the Pinz has over twice the ground clearance under the diffs than the 101 and has diff locks as standard. Clearance under the body is probably similar. The 101 is constant 4wd where the Pinz is part time.
The 101 is probably a little faster on the road, has a much better engine note :) and it would seem to burn about the same amount of fuel as the 2.5 litre aircooled four in the Pinz. In most off road situations the Pinz would be better than a standard 101 but there would not be much in it where the 101 was also locked. The main advantage the Pinz would have is in situations where major under diff clearance is needed. Both vehicles have limited suspension travel but this is taken car of when diff locks are on or fitted. The Pinz has the same size wheels as the 101 but smaller tyres. 35s vs about 33s.
Both vehicles have their strengths and weaknesses in different conditions and in different configurations but I do not think direct performance comparisons are to fair to either vehicle.
Thanks to James and his dad - maybe some test driving next time :).

A bit hard to see but note the clearance under the diffs

I owned a couple of Hafs back in the 90s they were the most capable rubber tyred vehicles I have ever driven without exception.
People often criticise them for having a top speed of 70km/H but a vehicle with suicidal tendencies at 50km/H they are way too fast lol
I have always wanted to get my hands on a Pinzi but have never seen one in the areas of Australia that I have lived.
They are brilliantly engineered and a different beast when compared to a 101

Thank you very much Garry!
I have been wanting to do the same thread but have been having difficulties getting my pictures on to the computer. I highly agree with all your comments, and certainly can not denny the sound of the 101 is something i would much rather listen too!!!
Next there will certainly be a drive comparison :), and i hope to have a Haflinger up and running soon so might chuck that into the batch for fun :).
I would just like to say thank you for making the effort to show us your 101! and it was great to have you and Peter over for the midday, send me a PM next time your heading to the area.

Though I have lived in Newcastle off and on since the early 70s and had 4wds from not much later - I have never driven Stockton. Mainly because my family lives about 1km from Nine Mile beach (Blacksmiths to Red Head). It used to be free range when the sand miners were active but like all areas restrictions are starting to strangle use but you can still get onto the beach.
I have been told that Nine Mile Beach is technically more difficult than Stockton but Stockton has a bit more area.
As I was painting house - I took my 101 as it could carry all the gear I had - but I didn't get any chance to give the beach a go. I will be back up there in a month or so so might give the beach a go or trespass on James' turf.:)

I gather Garry your 101 did the whole trip without any dramas which is good news.
You have to get that locker in the rear to keep that Pinz at bay.
I was thinking a Month where it is not too hot and frying under the sun ( no trees at Stockton) and not too cold from the wind which can blast around Stockton.

If you guys are going to Stockton let me know i would love to tag along and take come pics, that would be one rare site to see!!!
As for difficult driving, Stockton can be way worse then 9 mile if you know where to look for trouble ;) but typically its a fairly easy drive.

For sure, im keen to drive on Stockton anytime, Once my county is back on the road I will be organising some beach/bush trips, a few of us had been talking about arranging another AULRO trip out there for later on in the year, we could certainly make a weekend of it. Maybe we could arrange for late November? otherwise us local guys always do new years on the beach too, we have done it every year for the last 3-4 we could arrange a trip for around then?

Hi garrycol, Like the 101, are those tyres miches. I have been running Alliance Nato pattern 900x16 but wanted radials . Michelin said I had to have xl,s. So I bought them , more aroad pattern, they said they dont make xs anymore. These xls are O.K. strong sidewalls , but are slightly over 16" , bugger to centre on rim . Where did you source yours from.
Cheers Didiman.

My tyres are cheap MRF Sand Grip conventional tyres. They seem to perform well both on and off road but after 2500km the wear on primary tread blocks is noticeable. The tyres have smaller primary tread blocks and when these are worn there are larger secondary blocks - there are usually two primary blocks on each of the secondary blocks.
The tyres are 8 ply. I suspect your Alliance tyres are a better tyre.
Cheers

Would Iain Reed like to take his 101.
Would Oliver 1981 like to take his FC
Any other unusual landrovers to come ?
How would the old stuff compare to a Puma or D3
Tmes........early november or early march ???????.
Am I playing with my self .........what do you think?
Sand driving and camp fire yarns with a early morning hang over cleansing swim in the surf ?????

I am always going to Newcastle - will be there again in about 4 weeks with the 101 to get my new front driveshaft.
As I am now a man of leisure - I would probably be available to fit in with whatever is planned.

Well it sounds great to me, i dont exactly have a FC101 but i will be your local guide, and maybe in a very different county.... as for dates, late November would be doable, just waiting to hear when my work xmas party is on but the first half of November i will be at Fraser Island :)
As for a beach camp, and a early morning anti seedy swim, sounds good, its our usual routine for such a weekend ;)

Looking at the calendar the weekend 21/22 November.
Any later and it starts being difficult with Xmas parties and family commitments.
I might be able to get some one to go with a Haffie.
If everyone likes the date I will start another thread on Aulro and invite all members.

If it was a green one rather than olive drab and had a longer wheel base it was MudSkull on his way to Fraser.

I didnt get much of a look it was heading north as I was doing my civic duties pulling 3 girls out of a car that had just plowed thru the brick wall at the Tamworth pool.
It just cruised on by and I hoped it was stopped by the lights, I havent seen a 101 in the flesh since 84 at the S of Arty when they were towing Rapiers

Gday everyone. I have nothing terribly rare or uncommon, but would be keen to tag along, even just for the day in my '71 2a (should be running and regoed by then)
If I am around that way and available I would be very keen to come and have a sticky beak.

Ok guys,
I for one think we should pursue this and get some numbers and dates! as it sounds like it would be a Grand weekend.
It seems we are all happy with a later weekend in November this year. The two best dates to my knowledge are the 14/15 and 21/22
I am best suited to the 14/15 as is the other Pinzgauer who will be attending from Sydney. Just a vote as to who can attend both or who is only free on one of the above mentioned weekends. And then according to Numbers we will arrange the final date.
Does all of this sound fair? i gathered i would get the ball rolling on what i feel will be an incredibly RARE! opurtunity! :)
James.

Have your say about the dates on the new thread.
I changed it as Grover 98 was going to have a problem with it.
He still may be able to do 21/22 Nov.
I suspect we will not able to keep everyone happy.
