hi all can you guys tell me the best combo for standard height or slightly raised springs and shocks with great road handling and good off road manners, would you go bilsteins ? ome and who makes aftermarket springs up to the bar with the double ones in the rear at the moment as standard

I can get you a price for a kit if you are interested. 2 inch lift springs and shocks for your 130, I have 4 inch extended shocks on my 130 and standard springs. shocks are german twin tube gassed. pm me or call me if you are interested.

my issue is stability on road and a bit more capable off road and still the retention of the load bay should it be required.
What is yours like to drive does it feel stable on road ?
What are they doing with the rear ie the two springs that are in situ, there must be a reason that they are in there (probably load bearing) have you had issues without these ? andy
just re-read you piece you retained the springs...think mine would benefit from new ones

We have bilsteins and are taking the inner springs out tomorrow and fitting Firestone airbags in to help when the camper is on. Time will tell if it is a better ride:)

Hey mate

I just underwent spring surgery in the Defender

Got a set of Boss Adjustables they are great ( so far )

They have a few different settings, on soft they are ...soft so they flex well. With the forklift at work anyway, haven't had a chance to take them offroad yet

I thought I'd set them on hard last night and it's a bloody stiff ride but the handling is awesome. Almost no body roll

I've softened them back down a bit now, hopefully it might save a trip to the dentist :p

I also fitted new Dobinson springs

yeah but the after thought for me on that is you are running a 110, whereas a 130 has a (something like) 1.4 ton load capacity which gives that unloaded bounce, your route may give an answer to the issue of unloaded bed firmness whilst giving the ability to give a little under load, they other night with 5 bodies in the truck the landy performed better the gear box selected gear properly without any selection difficulties (probably some wear on the synchro) and was a good drive.
so the four issues are ability off and on road and ability loaded and not for a 130.
so a set of shocks and springs that can look after my needs is the go, seems to be lots of shocks but no spring answers

I put air bags in the back of my 130.
With no wieght in the back i put about 35 psi to 40 psi and with heave loads i go up to 95 psi
I also have tough dog ajustable shock to stiffen up the ride under wieght
works well for me
cheers

so is that a replacement for the inner springs ? and secondly where did you source the air bags did you go for the non user freindly rangie ones or aftermarket ? does sound a popular conversion, what kind of compressor are you using can it be used for tyre inflation as well ? does the air bag go down over night like on a disco or rangie cheers Andy

The air bag replaces Both spring have aload rate of about 1500kg each.
Had mine put in by oppisite lock in Midland and are the after market AIRBAG MAN
I have a ARB diff lock compressor which will pump it up tp 100psi
No the air bags do not go down over night maybe loose about 2-3 psi over 2-3 weeks
only trouble i had was when i put 265/75 cooper stt on disco rims it rubed on the airbag. Changed back to 235/85 on defender rims every thing ok
cheers

I Like that idea, have seen it done a coil cab Pootrol and it was very good. Lardy I replaced my clapped out Raw (came with the vehicle) to Bilsteins (from Rovacraft) with standard springs back and front and wow what a difference, they are worth the money for sure.
Cheers

I bought my 130 with a 2" lifted EFS suspension kit. It's a load of crap.

I currently have one rear spring 25mm shorter then the other. I have made a spacer to keep the back end level. When I have some spare cash in the next few months I plan on getting Dobinsons coils (2" longer than standard) with bilstein shocks - toyoto 80 series in the front and nissan GQ in the back. These shocks give longer travel.

I don't carry that much gear in the back of my 130 - just camping gear so I will see how I go without airbags.

my 2 cents...

Cheers

I just did almost exactly as Jock The Rock did on my 130. Boss adjustable shocks, 2"lift dobinsons springs. Slightly harder in front for future winch and slightly stiffer outer spring on rear. Inner spring removed and replaced with polyair bags. Haven't loaded it up yet as I had some engine issues just afterwards and haven't yet put the camper back on it. However the ride and handling was dramatically improved unloaded. My only issue with the Boss adjustable shocks is you lose about 30mm up travel due to the adjuster mechanism. I have to say I never got anywhere near full compression while I was testing it.

Just out of interest mate, what setting do you run your shocks on for normal day to day driving?

I have my fronts on about 7-8 and the rears on about 5-6

I found with them on the hardest setting, the Landy handled really well on corners, but was a bit to jolty over bumps

(Sorry for the quick hijack lardy :) )

Hi Jock,

I have them all set on about 5-6 whilst unloaded and I suspect I'd need to crank the rear up to about 8 or 9 (perhaps even up to Max for onroad highway stuff) once I have the full camping set up on board. I've yet to load up the back as I've had engine issues since doing it and haven't been able to go camping as yet.

I found 5-6 to be firm enough to resist excessive body roll yet soft enough to absorb most bumps and jolts easily. It even handles nicely off road on the same settings. As I upgraded the spring rate a little it's quite firm on road and when unloaded handles like a go-kart.

Hi Guys, I have Bilstein in my 130 and although they handle beautifully, they seem to a little short limiting my down travel. Does any one know if they can be modifyed to have a longer stroke??

Cheers Jim

For the front, buy a set of Bilsteins to suit a Toyota 80 series. They are pin to pin and they have a longer extended length. Just watch the bump clearence - you may need to extend your bump stops a little.

The rear you can use Bilsteins to suit a nissan GQ, but you will need a pin to eye converter for the bottom mount. Once again watch the compressed length.

I had this set up on mY Range Rover and it flexed very well.

Call Shane at Suspension stuff. He will be able to give you the right length shock.

Cheers

Andrew
