Was reading an accident report the other day, an American C-17 crew landed but forgot to lower the gear.......how embarrassing would that be?? :D
(They slid for about 1.7km, no doubt thinking all the time s*%# s^&*#$ my career is over!)

Probably was a dare... one pilot to the other:
"I bet ya $50 I cn land this baby without wheels and without breaking it"
"OK, ill double that, if you can keep it from sliding more than 2ks"

How embarrassment!!!!! (with apologies to Effie)
That would be the reason why air traffic control in Australia always ask military pilots to check for green lights, indicating their undercarriage is lowered.
As an aside, we had a Cessna Caravan float plane land at Hamilton Island wheels up. Only skidded on the floats for about 50 metres, but a crew of about 30 spent the next 3 hours picking all of the aluminium out of the bitumen. Within 15 minutes a crane was out on the runway, lifted the Cessna, wheels were lowered, Cessna put back down, started up and taxied off. The pilots employment was terminated as this was the second time he'd done it, and they'd only recently refitted the repaired floats.

Reminds me of a time at Sydney S(KS)A when a pilot (lighty) landed, was asked by ATC to "expedite clearance of the runway". In his haste to clear the run way he retracted his undercarriage. Needless to say the runway (07/25) wasn't cleared for a couple of hours.

When I was in Wewak I got a story that explained one of the airframe log book entries in the Cessna 180 I owned in the early seventies. It seems that when it was based in Wewak, one of the pilots was demonstrating that with the 180 you can get a real short landing run by touching down with the brakes on. The idea is that the main gear is so far forward that it is impossible to nose over if you touch down in a three point attitude.
It might work on grass - but it did not work on the tarmac at Wewak. Next log book entry was a complete rebuild in Brisbane.

Nah, that relates to a Mirage that landed "wheels-up" at Tullamarine in the early 70's.
Ever since the civvies must add the phrase "CHECK WHEELS" at the end of a landing clearance to MIL acft......we obviously don't care about the civvy aircraft! :lol2:

That is what I was alluding to, that it is ATC practice, not that we had suddenly started doing it because of that incident.

True, although we did "suddenly started doing it" in the 70's and never stopped.
You recon those jock's would be looking for those 3 pretty green lights without someone reminding them.
Bit like - "Clear for take off - Have you got clean undies on?"
