Today Milford launched a new cargo barrier for the current model Defender wagon (10/2007 +)
Part number: 706775
RRP $612
Installation $127
There is also a fit kit available
As soon as I found out, I organised an installation with a local retailer for next Wednesday.
I will post some photos as soon as it is installed in the defender.
I notice that the cb isn't on Milford's website yet ,but the factory assured me this afternoon that it is now available nationally for all of you not living in Adelaide.
I have a trip planned for the nullabor at the end of this month so it is really good timing since I've been waiting for it all year.

do you know whether it comes with an escape hatch?
I believe they had started to do this with some of there barriers but wouldn't give me an answer when I asked
really want a hatch on ours as we have window grills so want to be able to get the dogs out in an emergancy

Hi Dullbird
I can't tell from the pic but it looks the same design as that for the disco models and the older defenders as shown on the milford website !. There is a thing down the bottom but i don't think it is an escape hatch or "access window".
All cargo barriers are required to have some means of escape to prevent entrapment...but i suspect this is covered by providing a hammer to smash the rear window. Not much use for your situation!
I guess I can let you know on Wednesday when it is installed.
Cheers

OK so the cargo barrier is now installed in my Puma.
Apparently there were some issues with the floor mounts and the installers had someone from the Milford factory out to have a look. They said that Milford will make a slight adjustment to the location of the floor mounts in the next batch in order to facilitate installation. No problem for me as the installation was a fixed price!

Seems as solid as the proverbial brick ****house!

I had it mounted behind the rear seats but it can be moved to behind the front seats by using the extension rails supplied.

NB no hatches, windows etc.

Cheers

which side should the green glass hammer thing be fitted? it looks like its on the cargo side

Cargo side is the correct side.

They were introduced after some kids died in a wagon by pulling the tailgate shut on themselves. They couldn't get out and died on a hot day.

The hammer is there so if that happens you can smash a window.

Too late for me as I have a LR fitted. Shame to see Milford still needs to drill in to the vehicle when there are existing mounting points.
Weeds: Hammer should be on cargo side to smash rear window incase of entrapment.

The cute little green hammer is clipped onto the cargo side but could just as easily be clipped onto the passenger side!

I might replace it with a small tomahawk that can also be used for banging in tent pegs and chopping kindling.

I guess if the vehicle rolled and the rear door wouldn't open and the sliding windows were jammed and you happened to be travelling in the cargo space you might need to smash your way out.

When I bought the vehicle this year and found out there was no Milford barrier available I asked the dealer to fit the alternative LR guard (which was on their accessory list) pre delivery but they got back and said they couldn't get one because it didn't meet Oz standards?? So I decided to wait for the Milford one.

Did anyone get their LR through an Oz LR dealer or did you buy it direct from the Poms??

I meant LR (dog) guard not "LR" should use this "preview post" thing next time

The genuine LR barrier is not ADR approved and thus not available through LR Aust. I believe LR UK has asked that they not be shipped here after several people imported them from the UK. They fit without any modifications to the vehicle. I think there's a thread I contributed to about these that has some pic's.

Judging by the floor fitting at the base of the barrier I might have some difficulty fitting this together with the Outback drawer unit.

I wonder if the Rovacraft barrier recently released is compatible? It's certainly much less expensive.

I'll be able to give you a definitive answer to this very question soon - OL have ordered one for me - I have Outback drawers.

Hi Lou

I guess that Stuart can speak for himself but here is a pic of the rovacraft model.

OL rang me regarding fitting the Milford with Outback drawers - they said they'd need to modify the barrier to fit it - it's then not rated. I cancelled my order.
So I'm back to square 1 with no cargo barrier. :(

this is exactly why we didn't rush out and buy a draw...and have been waiting for a guard to be released so we could have a draw built to fit around the barrier.

Chicken and egg situation:

It has taken a very sluggish Milford over 2 years to modify its design to suit the 07 Defender. Outback got in first and without the benefit of having a barrier to work with. Maybe it'll get around to modifying its drawer unit to suit the 07 Defender with an 09 Milford barrier....they were able to do this with the previous models.

The Milford barrier has 4 finger tightened mounting bolts but each has an extension arrangement so that it can be mounted behind the front seats as well. I haven't bothered to remove these and on the floor mounts I have just swivelled and tucked the extension rail under the barrier. The barrier is well clear of any metal parts but mine does just touch the plastic ceiling lining at top dead centre. This I notice squeaks when offroad and the vehicle is twisting and bumping...but not really noticeable in the scheme of things.

The third picture shows that Milford have considered access to the strap that activates the seat tilt mechanism. I don't think that the rovacraft one has.

BTW Bluewagon what are the objects on the plastic trim on the left hand side under the window?

3 DIN sockets connected to dual battery setup. Only really needed two in the back (one for fridge + spare) but the 3 socket panel was same price as a double.

My final approach is to see if the Milford half barrier that was designed for the Outback drawers will fit the Puma - OL are looking into this for me now. I'll let you know how it goes.
