Freelander Diff

I hope someone can help me. I have a 2004 Freelander that I bought nearly a year ago and which has done around 120,000klms and minimal if any offroading. At my last service I was told there were metal shavings in the diff and that it would need replacement at a cost of AUS$2,000! I was also told the front brake rotors would need replacing. I have a little knowledge in these matters and thought that rotors may need machining but replacing? However the diff problem has me concerned. There is no noise from it at present. I am planning to get a second opinion; good idea? Any help would be appreciated.

Except for possible inconvenience - as the diff seems OK - what have you got to loose by replacing the oil and continuing to drive - I suspect you will have no issues.

As far as the rotors are concerned - certainly if they are out of limits they would have to be replaced (expensive at a dealer - the rotors are cheap to buy at a specialist). However I doubt they are out of limits or warped - mine have done 260,000 and are still within limits.

I think I would be taking your car elsewhere or doing the work yourself.

Thanks Garry. I have not worked on Land Rovers before but I do have the Repair Manual and have done a fair bit of work on my Rover P6B V8 so I know enough to do most things as long as it is not too involved or requires specialist equipment.
