Driving home this evening, Grace spotted an identical 2 door RRC - albeit very rough and a bit sad - sitting outside a local mechanic's workshop. So we went and had a peek (not that I'm obsessive :p) Anyway, It was in a very sorry state, but this caught my eye behind the grill........

I've never seen this on a RRC, so how unusual is this?
Is it possible to fit it to my RRC?

I'm considering going back tomorrow to find out what's happening with the vehicle.

is it a capstan winch?

Yep - looks like it. Have seen them on Landies, but have never seen it on a RR. Given that the vehicle this is on has Sahara dust duco, puts it about 1975/76.

First one I've ever seen too.

It's a proper LR accessory - driven by the starter cog on the crank. I knew of one on a RR in 2001.

I have been doing a little research this evening and the only references I have found for a Capstan winch on a RRC of this era (mid 70s) refers to RRC fitments for the British Secret Intelligence Service and for The British Commanders'-in-Chief Mission to the Soviet Forces in Germany (BRIXMIS).

yep, watch out Dom it could be a trojan horse with agents just sitting inside it waiting till you turn your back :).

I have a Capstan winch on the front of the Game that I have managed to get working and it would be interesting to see one on a Range Rover. There were two types used on the series 3 as far as I have been able to find out. The one on mine is made by Aeroparts and it looks different to that one. The other type was made by Fairey (same as the overdrives) and it looks like that might be one of them. Mine has no letters on top of the drum. I have managed to find a fair bit of information on line so if you get it let me know and I will dig up the adresses. I found 20mm polypropylene rope for it as well for only $2 per metre so I bought 30m.

Range Rover Workshop manual (up to 86) Page 90-6 (optional equipment) Winch-front-capstan. Should be of Fairy make, 3100 lbs @ 1000rpm.

Thanks all - yep, if I checked the manual first, it would have answered my question

The Fairy winch fitted tto RRC had a recommended pull of only 1450kg, so its understandable why not many made onto the RRC - given the weight of the vehicle is 2000kg.

Even a single snatch block will solve that problem.
