well i have a problem my siberian husky has become obsessed with the possum that lives in the trees in my backyard, she stands at the bottom of the trees all night waiting for it to come down and barks at it all night its kinda funny excepit its prob annoying my neighbours
now my question is how can i go about relocating the possum, can i get the local ranger to get rid of it
there is one good thing that has come out of it but, the possum used to come into my roof at night and keep me up now it wont come out of the tree coz of the dog :p

Good luck, but possums, like much of our wildlife, don't take well to relocation.

mmmm i'd go something a little smaller and higher powered..... .17 is the possum shooters favourite, and if you dont get a hollowpoint, the bullet *should* go straight through.....
that way, the husky gets fed, your neighbours get sleep and everyone is happy!

a 22 would be the go but something tells me this is illegal and not a good idea in the middle of a neighbourhood
is it illegal to kill possums they look to cute to kill anyway would rather just see it taken up to the bush nearby

2 Things come to mind.
1st.... Find a New Zealand'er and let them lose in the back yard and plead inocence if anything happens.:whistling:
When over there for a rescue compition we noticed they have orginized possum hunts(through the gun shops) as they are a declaired pest.
2nd....Husky inside until possum on roof and then "release the hounds", possum won't get back to the tree if you time it right.:BigThumb:.Won't have to feed that night!
Cheers.

so that still dont answer my question is it illegal to kill them im ready to go out there and "bump" it out the tree and let the dog have dinner

It's illegal to kill any native fauna...so yes...it's illegal. It's also illegal to trap and relocate then yourself I believe.
what are they gonna do? arrest the dog? personally, i prefer feedign the possum to the dog...... eliminates evidence!

A "clean solution will be to contact a snake catcher and "borrow" a large carpet snake.
It will be the law of the jungle and finish the argument.
Then again.........once the possum goes another bugger will claim the tree as its territory.
Solution: get a pair of ear plugs :D

If you or a professional traps one you may only relocate it 50 metres away. They are territorial and relocating one into another territory causes fights in which one or both usually dies.

We had 2 living in our first house before we moved in, for a month the little ****ers kept us awake all night chewing the weatherboards to bits. Tried to trap it with all kinds of bait but nothing worked, in the end it was our trusty staffy that sniffed them out one day in a kitchen wall. I pulled the boards off and yanked those little bastards out while wearing welding gloves, put them in a cat cage and waited till after dark and took them for a little drive over the yarra and let them go in Westefolds Park. The council / rangers were no help and peter the wallet raper wanted a small fortune so i delt with it myself.

Get the dogs bark removed, or keep it inside at night, and let nature be. That'd be the least cruel and fairest solution. Or yes, just put something slippery around the base of the tree so the possum moves on.

Training the dog not to bark at the Possum, the dog will learn quicker than the Possum.
Why is it always "kill the Possum", shouldn't we respect for our native wildlife.
If I was to kill the Possums and other wildlife where we are, I would go broke buying bullets and be up all god dam night.
Teach the dog to ignore the Possum, it can be done, we have a Staffie, we know what obsession is:D

mmm well is it nice to know it is not just my Siberian Huskys that like possums and sit under the tree howling and looking at them .
Although our problem has been sorted by the dogs eating any possum that ends up on the ground. That is about 4 that i know about but god knows how many more they have had that i don't know about .
Only the other night I heard a terrible noise and went down stairs to find the two Huskies out side pushing the back door backwards and forward between them selves . Wondered what they were doing in the dark untill i saw a possum balanced on the top of the door which they were try to knock of . I knew the moment if fell of it was a gonner. So had to move the dogs inside untill it was gone . But very rarley do possums come in our back yard these days

The problem with Huskies is they are dame good Hunters. I have never seen a dogs stalk or hunt like my two do. Not like most dogs that barrel towards a bird , possum , cat or what ever. My two hunt like you see tigers on the TV. One creeps one way and the other creeps the other way to cut the prey of . They work as a team and very very rarley does the target get away . But the rest of the time they are the most loving dogs i have ever know .
Huskies are well know as a breed for hunting and killing. After all they are know for eating cats not just chasing them ( pretty much one of the many reasons i got huskies :))

Get those stop bark collars that give the mongrel thing an electric shock when it barks. These gadgets work. Fixed the rotten Ridgeback next door which barked everytime someone or thing walked past their fence. It was on its last chance with the Council owing to numerous complaints from other neighbours about 24 hour barking. I don't complain about noise because I weld, grind, hammer, run race car engines, etc. and don't like to draw the crabs.
Personally, I can't see the need for dogs in an urban environment except for guide dogs and the like.

We have a kelpie cross who is also obsessed with possums but we just put her on the chain at night away from the trees and she's OK. We also have possums in the roof and it's easier to let them be than to stress about removing them. Rats wont usually inhabit a roof that possums are in so there is some benefit.

As mentioned - possums are territorial and if this one is removed it opens up a new territory for another possum and you will have a new possum within a week or two.
You need to look at options with respect to the dog and the possum. Can you put a nice comfy nesting box for poss in another tree away from doggie - likewise why does doggie need to be out at night chasing possums - I am sure doggie would rather be curled up in your lounge room or on your bed with you.

This is the best option, our problem was an old house left vacant for 3 months and the possums moved into the roof. Once fixed they couldnt get back in and the dog would just stare up at the trees and whine now and then. We have ringtails as well as the bushy tails and love showing them to the kids when they are in the trees.

These are also illegal...unless they follow a strict guideline and you have been advised by a vet and or professional trainer. the collar is used for a minimum period and you have to have a professional from the company that makes them to come out and show you how to train the dog.
electric collars are a big NO NO...I'm not sure how strict they are on them in other states but if your caught using them in NSW you can get prosecuted for it....
as for dogs in an urban environment why not just because your miserable and happy with your own company doesn't mean everyone else has to be.
my dogs are my family and they don't bark unless someone is entering the house......

Oh i don't know. We have had hardly any possums for the past 6 months . The insident the other day was the first in a long time with possums and the dogs. Well ones where the dogs made a noise anyway. God know what they are up to in the dark bit at the back of the Garden. But what ever it is they don' make a sound .

Which, at the end of the day, is a training issue...;) Pet ownership is a responsibility and training forms part of that - from very early on.

exactly right and not one that needs to be done by planting an electric shock through the thing......;)

just wondering if something hot like cayane pepper put all over the tree trunk might deter the possums. Otherwise go the carpet snake idea. If caught relocating the possum piont out you love animals and did not want to kill it, so are moving it to a lovely bush place [could leave it in a box at local wildlife carer when thy are not home, not giving your address where the possum came from]. Too often I see possums as road kill. If you note such spots realise that you are moving it into a territory that has been vacated, by death of the previous occupant of that spot.

Some of us like possums and think they are cute :D You know.....us soft feminine types ;) Can't shoot them...it's cruel and illegal;)
Okaaaay. Plan 'B'
Get possum trap from friendly DCE type person, use feminine charm to avoid charge and catch possum (apple, liquid amber leaves or rose petals make good bait).
Find address of someone you don't like such as local MP, in-laws, 'reformed' pedofile, scientoligist or other crackpot; sneak round in dead of night and release in their yard. Got to be dead of night, much more satisfying.
Darwinian possum turf fight may ensue causing even more grief for the selected recipient thus adding further to your pleasure.
See, I can curb my baser male instincts and be a SNAG !
Return home and enjoy a nice roast "cuddly" lamb sandwich.

When we lived on Kangaroo Island in the 70's my Labrador killed a possum (dogs are regarded as a possums natural enemy). Dad rescued a baby possum from its pouch. The dog and the possum became great friends and the possum would not leave us. It used to ride around on the Labradors back endlessly.
