View Full Version : Streamlining my toolkit.

I realised recently that I carry an large amount of unnecessary bits and bobs in the back of my Disco so I'm going about trying to reduce some of it.
When it comes to my toolkit I'm sure there are quite a few items I can actually do without. For example, I've for a full set of combination ring spanners and a sizeable socket set however, I'm sure only a few of these would actually of use on the Disco.
My question then is this: other than going round the car checking each nut and bolt, is there a list of all the spanner sizes and the like which are of use with the Disco so I can reduce the amount of stuff I'm carrying around? Do I really need that 4mm socket spanner or that 15/16" ring spanner and many of the other sizes in between?
Thanks in advance! :)
D'oh! I spelt 'streamlining' wrong and I can't edit the title? Mods?

8mm, 10mm, 13mm, 17mm, 19mm (+6mm for holding shock pins)
Are common on Disco....
Cant say (aside from GearBox) that I remember using anything else.

Don't forget the viscous fan spanner and the wheel bearing hub nut socket. Not sure of the sizes offhand. Also the trim removal tool.

Fixed.
Dave's pretty right when it comes to sizing. I'd add a 7mm for some smaller bolts.
I carry a Sidchrome 38-piece A/F Metric combination 3/8" and 1/4" drive socket set Sidchrome 38pce Combo Socket Set 1/4 & 3/8"". #19105 (http://www.justtools.com.au/prod1084.htm). It has too many pieces for what I need but as I had it anyway....

I also carry a screwdriver set and a set of Sidchrome open-end/ring spanners Sidchrome 16pce R&OE Spanner Set AF & Metric. #22105 (http://www.justtools.com.au/prod1090.htm)

Of course, I have pliers and side cutters as well.

18mm for the shocks,
What hose clamps do you have 5/16?,
14mm if you lossen the serpintine belt.
Ones to fit those spare bolts you carry too.
12" EFS.

The one you leave out is the one you'll need too, refer Murphy ;)
Easier to loose a passenger :p
Cheers.

Crankshaft nut is the same size as the wheel nuts.

This is what I did...
I started off with a fairly basic toolkit and kept it in a separate location to the rest of the tools. When I worked on the car, if I used a tool that wasn't originally in this tool kit, once the job was finished, that's where it would go...
That way, I managed to keep my toolkit to something manageable whilst also having the special tools necessary for most jobs.

personally, i've allways worked on the theory that the only tools you dont carry with you are the ones that you'll need to get you out of trouble at the most inconvenient of times....

Lately I've had to use 9/16" spanners a fair bit. I can't remember why though :(.

I doubt that will help with some of the places I've seen Sam get his Disco into :).
I have a very basic tool kit that lives in the car & I have a bag that I throw all my spanners, 3/8 socket set, hammer, big shifter & multis, big screwdrivers/levers, cable ties, tape, etc when I go out with you guys.
Believe me, you can never have enough tools when you go out in the bush - I think I've used just about all I carry at some stage or another.

I have and complete 1/2in, 3/8 and 1/4in drive socket sets and spanner set metric/AF, a complete screwdriver set, Tork and allen key set, shifting spanners 100mm to 250mm, viscuos fan spanner and locking tool, impact screwdriver, mallet, extendable magnet and of coarse all the pliers and cutters and so on.
You never know what you might use and the day you want that 4mm socket is the day you hope someone else didn't down size his tools:D

I have so many spare and duplicate tools (and toolboxes to put them in) that I can outfit all my cars and bikes. :D
I think I have 7 or 8 (maybe more) socket sets in 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" and 3/4" drive. There are two large multidrawer tool chests on trolleys, inumerable screwdrivers, and don't ask how many pairs of pliers of various types, etc.
I got rid of a lot of stuff to my daughter but she says she doesn't need any more.

I remember the shed pic with the plane in it, must have been blocking the tools. Sounds like it's time for a visit. Are you going away any time soon?

Thanks for all the replies!
I'm beginning to think that I might as well just keep everything I've got in the car 'just in case' thanks mainly to the potential of Murphy and his law...
I'll just have to find more imaginative ways of fitting everything or as was suggested earlier, just loose one of the passengers :)

I must admit I carry far more tools than I ever need for my car, but then you don't know whether it will be your car or somebody elses that you'll be using them on.
I do go on a club trip at least once a month and its always nicer to be able to get everyone home than laeve someone behind because they didn't have the right size spanner.

Don't forget a small mirror, a magnetic pickup with the long flexible handle and a piece of plastic tube for listening to noises... and a tube of handcleaner;)

with all the prep work I did for the cape and all the gear I was carrying I used everything I took with the exception of the tirfor, the airbag jack and the can of areostart.

Got a feeling the main alternator bolt is one of those funny star spannery things, same as for the rear seats.

Besides ring and open spanners and 3/8 socket set I always have
.....Vise grips ...big and small sized.
......electricians shears
..... pop riveter and a range of rivets
..... battery drill converted to run off car 12V and a range of sharp drills.
----multimeter
Mainly used for camping stuff rather than car stuff but those are the tools I use the most.
As for materials
...range of screws bolts nuts, hose clamps
... couple of metres of hoop iron
.... small roll aluminium flashing
... roll of utility wire
....lots of gaffa tape.
....silicon
you can bodgy up a lot of repairs with those.
But yes the RACv Extra Care card is always packed too :D

A picture paints a thousand words
Here is what we take on Hols - most things covered I think. As for metric spanners the D2 has at least 1 bolt for every size between 8mm and 19mm (except 9mm and 12mm) and also 21, 24, 27, 30 and 32mm
General tools
http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/8658/april30085.jpg (http://img43.imageshack.us/i/april30085.jpg/)
All fit into small ammo box along with an short open ended 6mm-22mm set
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/9477/april30088.jpg (http://img6.imageshack.us/i/april30088.jpg/)
Others - long series ring spanners 6mm-32mm, wheel spanner (3.4 inch drive with extension) huge multis, tyre levers, fan spanner set etc
