Roof Rack base options

I have been preparing the roof rack my bro built ready to put on the Disco. My roof rack is shown below:

What I want to know is what base can I put on top.. such as pic below:

I was thinking some kind of heavy duty rubber, but one that wont sag between the ribs. Marine ply was suggested to me, not sure how that will hold up in the constant elements!

So what do you suggest?

Marine ply will be fine if you paint it with some good paint (dare I suggest Marine paint!).

Does it need to have flat/smooth bottom? If not, you can get some quite stiff (but light) galv mesh with 20mm squares that would cover the gaps. Just a thought.

I would contact Perforated Metal (www.perforatedmetal.com.au) which is in Tasmania.
They have a good pdf catalogue on their site where you can see whay it is available

I rang them and a place called Ullrich which is here too. I can get a security mess screen (1250x2000) for $90 powder coated in black. Not bad really when I saw a security screen at the tip shop for $40!
