View Full Version : baby seats on D2 - dilema - will 3 fit?

Hi All,
i've just been reading up on the new legislation about to come into effect on 4th November that VIC roads will be introducing about changes to how your kids (7 years and under) are to be properly restrained in vehicles.

the law and standards on child restraints - RACV (http://www.racv.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/racv/Internet/Primary/road+safety/child+safety/child+restraints/the+law+and+standards+on+child+restraints/)

Unfortunately this means that we will need to pack away our 2year olds booster seat (gonna be fun explaining that to her) and get a different seat as #3 is due in November & will be using #2's seat. Pain in the proverbial completely to be honest but their safety is paramount!

So onto my question/s:

Has anyone successfully got 3 baby seats installed in the back seat of a D2? One will be rear facing near the door, and the other two will be front facing (middle and other side of the door)... We've got one that is a Safe n Sound Royale and the other is a Safe n Sound Compaq Delux and hope to stick around the size of the compaq delux for the third? What brands/model have others used?

My other thought was to have an appropriate seat put in the cargo area of the landrover for the oldest if three won't fit??? which has to be better than hubby's suggestion of buying a 7 seater kia - which I am completely loath to do as I love my landy and have flat out told him he's got to be kidding - i.e NO!

Appreciate any suggestions...

Thanks,

Lp

Has your D2 got the anchor points for the restraints in the back cargo area, if so how many:confused:

Not the rings, they are cargo tie down points.

This is where the seats will be anchored too and depending on how many you have, will depend on how many you can fit.

I am not to sure if you would fit three seats across the second row, however there is three anchor points in my D2.

There is one for the centre position on the roof above the rear door and the other two, left and right anchor points are actually part of the disco seats themselves. They are on the backs about half way down.

I have two of the full height booster seats in the car and it does not look like a third of any kind would fit, unless you could use atleast one of the very small sit on boosters that have no back etc., but then these do not clip into the vehicle anywhere and may not be suitable with the new legislation.

Cheers,

Never put baby seats in a Discovery, but I fit three - two Royales and a Compaq - in both the Defender and our Subaru Outback. Now have two Infa-something boosters with Compaq between them instead.

If you are using boosters you might want to look into seat belt extension straps, it'd make strapping into the booster a lot less acrobatic. I'll get to them one day, but four of them is a bit of a whack to the wallet at one go.

Thanks all for the replies.

I can fit two baby seats, one forward and one rear facing as well as a high back booster seat ok with no need for extra extension straps. The booster seat unfortunately has to go as legislation states that a child under the age of 4years needs to be in a appropriate seat with an inbuilt harness, which the booster doesn't...

I think i'll just need to make a trip to the baby store and take some measurements width wise factoring in the existing seat widths.... i'll post my findings here as I am sure this 'may' help someone else out in future :-?

Cheers,

Biggest issue i have found with child seats in the D2 are the wheel arches at the edge of the rear seat which sit slightly higher than the seat itself.

With some child seats you cannot move the seat far enough over to the edge.

That was exactly the problem that I found, and annoying at that too!

I have the same problem too but luckily i think the regs are different up here in NSW i have a 8 month old, a five year old, and another on the way. we found with the second that the baby seat was a tight squeeze behind the front seats as both the misses and myself are around 6ft tall so gonna put the rear facing seat in the middle next time i think

Right or wrong...

I used a car seat that had T shaped steel bar at the rear and just cut off one side of the bar so i could move it across to one side.

For the polystyrene booster seat i just scalloped out a section over the wheel arch.

Hi All,
it's been eeons since I have been online ... we celebrated the arrival of #3 on the 18th November - Miles Owen; so with 3 under 3 now life is short of a little busy :-)

I thought i'd take the time to update on my earlier post...

Since changes to legislation we purchased a new seat for our eldest which is a babylove ezyswitch (fizzy pink). So the configuration in the middle row is:

SnS Royale ff + Baby Love EzySwitch ff + SnS Compaq Deluxe rf

(SnS = Safe n Sound)
(ff = forward facing)
(rf = rear facing)

A word of suggestion, while the authorised baby seat fitters are there for a purpose don't always take their word, or lack there of! Point to note is that he only recommended the safe n sound compaq delux and it wasn't until he saw what I had purchased in store that he said "oh the babylove ezyswitch and the safe n sound compaq deluxe are the ones we recommend when there's limited space" ... gee thanks for the suggestion eh! We saved ourselves there 169.00 compared to the other seat!!

As for any space between all three seats - THERE IS NONE. The main thing is that they all fit, no cutting of any seats and no lop sided seats sitting on wheel arches... :-)

Hope that helps folk

Hi Veronika,
The maxi riders are huge seats. I found that with both the existing safe and sound seats the maxi rider was ridiculously huge with it's wings and just looking at the space in the middle between both seats - something like that wouldn't fit.

I've not used or needed any extensions straps.

Your best bet would be to go to an authorised baby seat fitting station as I have no idea on the inside specs of a D4 or of anyother seats you may have already...

Legislation may be different in Vic to Bris also :-)
