Is saw this on the RRNET forum:
$110 is bargain to get an hour of a $100,000 a year tech.
to which I replied:
Ruddy heck! That's a damn sight more than any mechanic in Australia would get.
But I'd forgotton about JC - he's looking to buy a P38A. :D

Rich??? Youre 'avin a larf!:o
It took us quite some time to save for the eldests school trip, we don't have any credit cards and the youngest car own is a 1993 LSE, which is in bits anyway:(
Anyone who knows me realises we aren't from the top end of town:p
Still, a static display P38a...Now THERES an idea, I won't have to buy a motor for it then:D

you're kidding, right?

Nope, it is too low?
The labour crew (no builders) that assembled the garage here in Bundy are in $20 per hour so a high qualified mechanic have to be at the very least at welders rate.
If not, get a set of tools, a service van and do home calls!
Back in 1989/1990 I was on $35.00 per hour as a self employed CNC NC service fitter.

Any one who complains at the cost of mechanics up to $100ish ph, have probabley never been self employed. They have little understanding of overheads and risk involved.

The liability insurance in case of a possible damage on a $500000 NC machine back in 1990 was very expensive but it was not the machine that have to taken into consideration, the lost production was another factor.

I never ceases to be amazed at the number of people who think you must be a millionaire because you own a small business. If I could work as an employee for the same number of hours I have to do as a business owner, I would have a better chance of being a millionaire.

plus when you own a small business or are self employed as a serviceman you never know if you are going to get a job tomorrow or get pay for the work already done. :(

True, many a time a few years ago I though about going back to work for an employer, then I got some help in the office, a good accntant, moved premises etc and the bank started to listen. Best thing I did was keep forging ahead:) I wouldn't go back for anything. It can be a hell of a lot of extra work and stress, but IME the rewards outweigh the pain and suffering still:D
Good luck and keep working hard:)

3000 excuse later and you say this :lol2:
would of been much much less painful if you had said this first rather than say your coming to events and then have 5 anniversarys you have to fit in, then your eye exploded so now you can't make it :D

My 4WD is to take me places I can't get to in a road car. e.g., for camping, etc.
I also enjoy driving it more than a car. I also prefer it over my motorbikes.

When we go out Ron its not always rock hoping:) sometimes we go out for just scenic drives....if your not interested in that then I reckon your camp sites really must be excessable by a 2wd:p

$17.50 per hour, they have to be mad
I would do as Bigjon have done!
I guess that the idea is to get a job in your trade where the competition charge a lot of money for their services.
I remember back in 1986 GE used to charge $300 for call out and $250 per hour for servicing the NC box in an Index slant lathe.
I was very cheap for my employer earning 39000 that year :)
Then I started my own business and in 1989 my charfe rate was $35 per hour plus travelling, Very competitive rate which the importers of the machines were unable to match.
It would be hard to do that in the motor cars industry. I guess :(

To employ a trained, experienced tech : min $25 ph. Overheads for holiday pay, sick leave provisions, compulsory superannuation and workers comp insurance : added another $15 (min) per hour.
Then there is the cost of a complete tool set for each bay /tech ($2,500 =$10ph over a year) plus additional margin to employ a receptionist /service advisers etc. etc. add in insurance, electricity, EPA fees, council rates... and interest etc on the $$$$ it cost to build / lease the workshop... Plus a profit margin to plough back to maintain equipment, invest in new technology etc ... it all adds up.
That's why we need forums like this one to help us DIY-ers feed our obsession

mmm...I own a medium sized business, and am very much thinking of pulling back to a small business.. I made more money, employed less people, had an awfull lot less stress and more free time...which is pretty much the point innit???.
and anyway, if the Dealer charged out $110 per hour and the tech 'only' gets $27.50 and is grumbling about it...leave and start up on their own...just like the dealer once did.

It is the same in every business. The usual chargeout rate is at least 3x salary/wage. I was talking to a (junior) engineering consultant the other day who is charged out at 6.5x salary.

Just did EXACTLY that.Couldnt put up with the staff...they drove me crazy.Good techs were impossible to find,& i was paying a lot more than $27/h,try $30 plus, also vehicles, phones, bonuses, etc.
I walked away from maintenance contracts, some worth well over 150k,plus all the repairs that were extra as well.
I made good money while i did it,but after 18yrs,i decided enough was enough. There were also many risks,WH&S being one of the main ones,i didnt want to lose everything i had.
I dont make the money i used to,but money isn't everything.
In fact the decision to do what i did was one of the hardest decisions i have ever made,& i have been in this industry,A/c & refrig. for over 30 yrs.
I also had to break the news to many good, loyal customers, some we had been working for over 20yrs.
Things are so much better....:)
