Out of interest, how old is your daily driver (car, landy, etc...)?
Ours is either a 1968 IIA or a 1987 110...
I will allow multiple choices for families with more than one.

At the moment it's a 2007 Mitsubishi Ralliart Colt, but will soon be superceded (in all ways imaginable) by a 1971 series 2a SWB as the vehicle of choice (for me, at least)

Just interest. JD posted in another thread that older vehicles do fewer km per year. I was just interested to see how old everyone's DD was.

10/87 Range Rover.
My daily driver that I don't drive every day. When I am at work I drive the work Landcruiser.
Having said that, to go to work from home is 430 km or thereabouts and I do that at least once a month each way.

With the unspoken assumption that your daily driver does more kilometres than your other vehicle! (if any). My daily driver is the 2a - it is a rare day I don't drive it somewhere, although not often more than 10km. But the County, which I drive usually once a week into town, plus several (often interstate) trips per year, does probably at least five times the mileage!

JD - this is just a bit of fun, and hardly scientifically rigorous. However, the average motorist would clock up most of their km driving to work.
You must admit that your case is highly likely to be a statistical outlier.

In our household:
1989 Daihatsu charade - my daily driver (~20km/day)
1997 Saab 900 - my better half's (~70 km/day)
1986 LR 90 - weekend toy
1984 LR 120 - touring
The daily drivers definately do more kms than the hobby cars, but considering that I haven't started either of the landies in > 6 months, that's doesn't say much.
When both landies are going, I estimate doing:
~3,000kms/year in the 90 (weekend fun & short 4WD trips)
~7,500 kms in the 120, (long 4WD trip(s) + assumed yearly round trip to Adelaide)
~6,000kms in the Charade (daily commute)
~21,000 in the Saab (daily commute).
Loosely based estimates. Even assuming that we will always take a landy on our yearly pilgrimage accross the Nullabor, the daily drivers still win hands down.

Daily is my 1977 HZ Kingswood, gets driven probs 200-300kms a week to and from Uni at St. Lucia. More if i am going out to the property. I change the oil every 3000kms which equates to at least 3 times a year, coming up to my third this year in about a month so maybe I have done a bit more this year.
My 1970 ex-mill IIA gets driven on weekends to work and to mates places, it probably does around 1/4 the mileage that the kingswood does - basically if it's not peak-hour traffick I'll drive the IIA around. Gets driven 4-5 times a week at least to various places, take the dog in the back too. And of course if i'm going camping or 4WDing I take the IIA.
I love my old cars, they have all been VERY relyable, especially the kingswood as it gives me no troubles whatsoever even though I abuse it a bit driving through brisbane peak hour traffick

I usually ride a mountainbike if that helps ;)
I know someone who commutes on one of these though. It sort of looks like a motorbike if you squint hard enough:

I'd like to get a motorbike licence but I'd be too **** scared to ride daily in Melbourne CBD traffic. Think I'd prefer touring outside of Melbourne, maybe I could find a Royal Enfield diesel for up Strathbogie:D

My current weapon of choice is 2003 Jeep Grand Gherokee (150kms/day @ 15l/100km) but soon to be my 1981 Rangie as soon I fix some leaking seals, get it tuned and sell the missus car (she then gets the Jeep).

Surely one of these would be preferable?

Yanmar makes a bunch of small direct injection diesels which would be great in a bike... (even better with a turbo).

Daily driver, as I work from home I have a choice as general runabout which depends on the weather, and how long the trip may be. So mostly 1988 HJ75 ute, The 2a is off reg at the moment waiting for me to do some work. so the other choices are, 1924 and 1949 these choices need fine weather and a tail wind,

1992 RRC as my DD, about 100 to 250 kms/ week, but is the touring rig for FNQ, WA or anywhere else on the big island roughly once a year. It might see up to 15K on one of these trips over 4 to 5 weeks.
1991 Lexus LS400, SWMBO DD, about 500KM's a week on school run and weekend shopping etc etc. Also use it sometimes for low flying around the state when we need silence and comfort, EG the opposite of a 4BD1T in a RR!:D
1993 RRC LSE. Currently in bits awaiting Tdi transplant, this will then be SWMBO vehicle, and the LS400 will be moved on:( (apparently, I want to keep it actually)

this is just a bit of fun, and hardly scientifically rigorous. Ooh goody. What a surprise.
1975 Peugeot UO-8 3-4 days per week.
1962 Morris Minor 1000 2-3 days per week.
1987 Range Rover for towing or AULRO trips.
1948 Morris Minor on club runs.
Now, let's see how this information gets manipulated used to suit whatever end you're looking for.

My daily driver, mainly to work and back, is a 1985 Ford/Mazda Telstar Ghia, bought on ebay for $242.50, 3 years ago.
Apart from a new set of tyres, I would have spent under $200 on it in repairs....still have it in battleship grey undercoat, my cousins who drive around in red and blue fast cars with pretty lights on top have stopped pulling me over for a chat :D they just wave to me now.
Went through a very severe hail storm where just about every car in the staff carpark stuffed moderate to extreme damage.....my damage......not one dint and no broken glass.

1974 2 door RRC, 2nd owner fitted Chev and gas at around 100k k's, drove it towing a van around Oz for 150k k's.
Someone else owned it in the interim doing unknown k's. I've had it for 10 years. Did about 120k k's then did a body swap from a red 81 2 door. Re-coed and fitted the Ritters C9 / LT 95 trans that came with the 81.
Have done another 60k k's with this combo with no hassles. Goes anywhere I have to, including interstate and central Melb.
So it's done about 400k on this motor and costs about 10 - 12 cents per km on gas.
cheers, DL

At the moment I am using my 1999 Suzuki Bandit to get to work (3km). Before I injured myself seven weeks ago (herniated disc) I was riding my Giant mountain bike, the 3ks to work is all up hill so quite a bit of work, but the 3ks home is therefore downhill. If I ride the pushie now I struggle to walk for about five minutes afterwards but slowly recovering so hopefully soon will be back riding it.
Wifey rides a 1996 Suzuki Bandit to work but was driving the Defender until recently, as parking sucks at her new work.
