graffiti .......how do the little punks do it and make to look so good, not that i approve of it but some of the punks have talent
this morning i thought it would be fun getting the boys to spray paint 'graffiti' up a big box that would hold my sisters birthday present
normal spray can sprays in a fan so i removed the nozzle, it sprayed better but there was still splatters bad on the edges and paint drips land on ones new leather thongs
the two boys and i reckon spray painting graffiti sucks and way too hard, should have got normal paint and brushes........instead of being a cheapskate

to stop the "globules" shake the can more. the density of the spray is controlled by range. They plan ahead and use the spray of the topmost layers to cover the overspray of the underside.
Its impressive to watch, I got to help out with one of the "sponsered" grafiti walls.

i love the proper atwork, but it ****s me off how 99% of it is simply tagging these days

I'm probably wasting my breath but without tags there wouldn't be any "artwork".
Tags and pieces go hand in hand. The sole purpose of any graffiti writer, who takes writing seriously, is to get his name "up" or seen the most.
The "artwork" or pieces, to be more precise, came about back in the 70's when New York writers basically ran out of room on the trains and in order to be seen they had to come up with another way. They started to do bigger and bolder letter's, using wider nozzles on the cans and started to fill in around the letters to cover up the tags.
It evolved from there to what you see today.
Some may be interested to know that in the 80's and 90's Melbourne, Australia was considered to be the graffiti capital of the world, outside of New York city.
There....breath wasted.:angel::)

D110V8D, your factory walls look colourful but it appears theres something written there and as hard as I try I cant work it out. I always think if the graffitti artists made there "work" more legible it also might make more sense.

What you see are 3 tags....the "style" of the tag or piece comes from within and is an expression of ones self. Like any art it wont make sense to many but it makes perfect sense to other artists or writers in this case.
Have a closer look and let your mind take in what is in front of you. Letters aren't just straight up and down. Writers have made an art out of letters and form which is hard for most to comprehend. :)
In fact most writers can tell who did a piece regardless of what it says purely by the style of the lettering and form of the piece, much the same as someone being able to pick a Salvador Dali (for example) piece out of hundreds of others without anything else to go on other than knowing his style.

I love graffiti I think there is some very talented people out there...I think they should be provided with some where to do it..IMHO
otherwise we end up with peoples personal property tagged which I don't agree with...
In the UK they started to provide walls for them to do it....to embrace the talent that was around.

D110V8, eyes of the beholder, yep. I put it the same as a well controlled drift...on a track...absolute beauty to behold...on the street? Ask any copper!
If the NVG starts putting up panels of tags I shall admit there is art, until that time....it is vandalism...pure and simple. Whilst you have allowed this "art" in your shed it is to be commended....but on the side of my truck or my dad's coach or the corner store? Sorry, it it's not asked for and costs a mint to remove.....funny enough, there has been a gethering of these "artists" in Melbourne this last month and some pretty elaborate tags have shown up all over the place, especially the length of Dandenong Road.
Art for art's sake doesn't cut it.

That's your (and millions of others) opinion and I respect it. I have heard it all before so I wont get into a debate. You should know though that the NGV does have graffiti art in it's permanent collection. Done by some of the best Melbourne has produced.:)
To get back to Kelvin's original question "little punks" manage to get their work so clean and neat these days because spray paint companies actually make paint for graffiti writers. Yes. It's a massive industry these days. In fact one of the major paint companies is right here in Australia. They also sponser writer teams believe it or not.

spoiling other peoples property with spray paint, spray painting signs in the local parks, smashing glass bus shelters, robbing old ladies, all antisocial acts. (no matter how good you are with a tin of paint, if you dont own it, leave it alone!)
But you can call it art if you want, it's a free country.

Art or not Art, that's a personal opinion.
But I wish I had a choice of whether to have this So call Art on my private property.
I don't give the graffitists permission to use my fence or building as a canvas. Why is my right not respected and MY property?
And why are these so called talented artists not man or woman enough to do in broad daylight, why do they have to crawl around like lowlifes hidden in the darkness and do their work?
I know where the spray can will be shoved if I catch them.
Freedom of expression, I will also express my freedom of expression towards them.
The chap up the road who spend quite a bit of money on beautifying his property and putting up a new painted fence, and then having it sprayed and tagged 2 days after, where was his freedom of choice and respect for his property.
I don't like it as it makes the neighbourhood look like a ghetto.
To those followers of this ART Form if that wish to call it that, think of others to.
Ban the production of spray cans would be a good call

There really isn't any justification for spraying paint on anyone else's property without permission. That is a crime. Simple.
Would you really choose to solve one crime with another though?
Believe it or not a lot of graffiti is done in broad daylight. Most people don't even notice it going on right in front of their eyes. If they do notice, they choose to look the other way because graffiti writers are all lawless thugs just waiting for the chance to kill someone for looking at them.;):D:D
Seriously though I personally think it is a shame that graffiti moved off the trains and into the streets. I also think it is wrong to paint on someones house, car or other personal, private items.

Are trains not the property of someone? It should never have moved off the writer's own property IMHO.
I like trains, I don't like grafiti, and it costs my rail museum every time some punk cuts the fence, marks their supposed territory and usually breaks whatever is left in the otherwise secure storage compounds.
The same money that would otherwise go towards restoring historic steam trains, rollingstock, support machinary and so forth.
Everything belongs to someone so unless the writer has permission or actually owns it, it shouldn't be written on.

I know graffiti is a crime. My point earlier was that painting on someones house or car etc is silly. Painting on the public transport system is not. It is the very essence of what graffiti writing is all about.
I'm not here to try and justify what others do. There are some in every group so to speak.
In my opinion painting a train that doesn't go anywhere is also a waste of time.
I know I'm not making any friends here but I don't give a rats fat one.:)
I like graffiti. It is at it's best done on trains rolling through the concrete jungle. Fresh.

It seems a same that Trains are even painted in the first place before leaving the factory. They should be sent out bare metal, why waste all that money anyway, and why even bother cleanings or maintaining them either, if we are going to live in a hovel of a society.

You seem to be confusing age with IQ, if you don't have the brains to know how to wear a cap, what size clothes fit you or own anything more valuable than a pressure-pack tin of paint it seems that anybody elses property is fair game for the moronic vandals.

I worked for over 2 years at the NGV in Melb.
I used to look at every piece of art that came in and out.... some i thought was good, some Crap.....
Argument point....
Blue poles.... Good or Bad???? it is down to your taste... Personally i dont see it worth what it is worth, but i like it...
My taste....... 16th century portraits...
But ive hung around Mick and Justin long enough to understand the desire and creation they have. its not someting i can do as my artistic flare stops at car panels....
Keep it alive.... it covers the ugly world we have created....
