I have an '85 Rangie with a buggered LT77 5 speed.
I have a good 4 speed and transfer case. Will it fit? Are the any problems with it bolting in?
I am aware the the controls are in diferent positions and that I will need to cut some holes in the gearbox cover for the levers.

And you'll get a better box too:)
You'll lose the bigger park brake drum etc, but in a RRC the smaller one will be adequate.

I have read that the transfer case used with the 4 speed is a weak unit and the transfer behind the 5 speed is stronger.
As I have both transfer cases I was wondering which transfer to use.
Will the 5 speed transfer be able to be fitted? I am also thinking of the control levers, they are different between models and I don't think that I will be able to make it work easily.

You cannot change over transfer cases as the 4 speed LT95 has the transfer integrated onto the gearbox (1 piece casing). There is nothing wrong with the LT95 transfer case behind a V8, only behind an Isuzu do you have any problems and that is only the intermediate shaft which can be rectified by fitting a tapered roller intermediate shaft assembly (easy to fit). This gearbox is a much better one than the LT77. The earlier rangies had this box so I would imagine that there would't be much difference in the transmission tunnel - probably just the rubber boot. If you got this assembly from the earlier model it should bolt in. Only other thing is the centre diff lock which is vacuum operated in the LT95 - you would have to get a vacuum switch and run a vacuum line from your motor...................Brian

Thank-you again for your help.
The engine and gearbox has been removed from the body but I still have the body.
Unfortunately the tunnel on the 4 speed body is not useable. Though the switch and all of the control levers are still there ready for use.

The LT95 will be OK if it came out of another RR but if it came out of a Stage 1 V8 it may end up being a little low geared. Higher transfer case gears are available but they do attract a premium. You can also get an O/D to go on the end of the LT95.

I am going to remove the gearbox tomorrow.
Do I need to remove the enging and gearbox together, or can I drop the gearbox on it's own?

be aware the cluch plate splines are different so you will need a new clutch plate. I tried to swap a almost new clutch from a two door onto later 4 door and found iout the hard way.

Does that mean that I need to use the clutch from the 5 speed box on the new 4 speed box?

Just to update anyone following.
Progress has been pretty slow unfortunately. The Rangie is at my Dads' and we down to one car now that I have decided to begin this project. Prior to begining though I had to clean out the shed.
I have removed and cleaned the LT77 from the donor engine and given it a reasonable clean. All looks good and ready to go in.
In jumping under the LR I am going to have to remove the extractors and cut the exhaust to do the job. When I relayed this to Dad he says we may as well try and fix this box.
It all started 14 months ago when the housing that the gear selector bolts to broke and I lost the use of all gears. I had the part repaired as I couldn't get one in Oz.
When I put it all back together the revs had to be matched to find 2nd gear. I thought i had blown a syncro but as the aluminium housing had been welded it may no longer be straight and true. I have been driving it ever since.
A week ago it wouldn't come out of 4th, then when it did I could only find 1st.
I limped it to work and home again that night-where upon turning onto my street it began changing as it has for the last 14 months (fine apart from having to match the revs on 2nd)
Dad said at the time that I should get a new part from UK but I never have done so.
Tomorrow I will go up and remove the top and inspect the syncros that I can see from the access hole and if they appear OK then I will go and order the new part from the UK-if they prove to be damaged, then I suppose that I will be fitting the 4 speed.
The part I am writing about is a FRC8883 for anyone with a parts catolouge.
