Owning a 2001 TD5 Discovery, I have recently thrown a heap of hard earned at it in an effort to make it a more reliable tourer for towing a camper trailer.
I have done the ECU, 2'' lift, Bilstein shocks and damper, low coolant alarm, greasable front shaft, new set of Mickey T's, EGR bypass, aswell as the normal wear and tear stuff like brakes etc...Then I go out today and discover oil in the loom, and a wet section at the hub on the front left wheel, this and half the dash lights have stopped working, so Am I wasting my time here on a car with 190,000k's on or do I trade up to an 03/04 or perservere.
Looking to do alot of travelling hopefully, so I need reliability, and Im just starting to doubt that Im going to get it ??

any ideas welcome...

OR sell some one a well set up and sorted tourer and start again with the great unknowen ;)

g'day mate,

yeah, I see what your saying. This oily loom worries me, but like you said, alot is sorted already.
I just spied a nice black 04 TD5 auto with 126,000 on it for 28 large, and I know alot of issues were sorted with the later ones and It got me thinkin.

Oil in the loom is quite easy to fix and there's no guarantee that a later vehicle won't get the same problem.

Thanks Graeme,

I read alot about guys fixing it themselves, not sure wots actually involved, whether the whole loom needs replacing or just the source of the problem needs fixing and the oil cleaned out of the old one. Will do more homework on that one.

Gday, My dad has one of the last D2a and the auto went into limp mode with 15000ks on the clock, they told him it was because of oil in the loom. I was on to him for ages to check the oil pump bolt he finally did it at 100000ks and it was held on by 2 threads, mine a 2001 was still rock solid tight at 200000.
I guess im trying to point out that you know what you have and have done there,s a heap of threads about fixing the loom or just carry a can of contact cleaner and check the plug at the ECU regularly.
The D2a still has alot of the same issues and you wont need to spend anywhere near 28gs to fix what you got.I would look at a D3.. Of course this is My Humble Opinion
Cheers Ean.

thanks Ean,

You make a fair point about the cost of a later model car compared with the cost of repairs on my current car, and its not going to be anywhere near as much as the cost to up grade. And will end up having a car that is more reliable because of what ive done to it.
Funny you should mention a D3. I was studying the D3 section the other day as the same thought had crossed my mind also. I dont know enough about them and they are a tad expensive for me at the moment, but I will definately be doing my homework on them for sure, they are growing on me..

Need some one to start a new section :lol2::rolleyes::lol2:

Don't do a trade in though. Some one here would want a well sorted D2!

That link is for "Urban Panzers" website, he chats here very regularly. Anything he seems to do is approached with such professionalism. Great site.

My D2, a V8, has had the same "usual" fixes and some; greasable prop, lift, tyres, door locks, indicator stalk, radiator, brake rotors, 3 amigos (twice), viscous fan coupling and head gaskets...Once you're in the worm hole you gotta keep going.. as they say, the "devil" you know...

I could never get another D2 and then justify the same "essential" fixes/improvements all over again.

Stick with it.. ;)

Nobby,

Thanks for the link mate, certainly makes things alot clearer when you see how easy the fix really is like that. ;)

Stuuu,

seems to be the general concenses. Will stick with it and all going well, will be up around your neck of the woods this time next year. :BigThumb:

Simon,

Yeah, in the worm hole for sure, but will keep on truckin with it. im enjoying the improvements to much to give it all away and start again like you said.

thanks heaps fellas..
