Over the last few months I've been scanning negatives. It's been good looking through pics that I had long forgotten about.
Anyway I thought I would share this one from the days before toymotor
Taken somewhere around a property called Tasman (SW of Cobar) in 1974 while I was out there fire fighting.

A different mixture, can't make out what is at the head of the queue, J10 jeep maybe ?

No Grockle, it's an International Acco 1800, nominal 8 ton load. Civilianized version of the military Australian Concieved Cab Over, a very popular truck here from the '60s til the late '90s.

naa, I reckon it's a small Inter or Dodge. The old J2000/3000 series Jeeps filled out the flares pretty well.

As best I can tell, you're right Rick. Impossible to distinguish the two, in that picture, both used the same cab.

I see the FJ40, and I think you are right there is one of those patrols with the double doors instead of a tailgate.

Honestly couldn't remember, we were there for 6 days and never "came in" so I'm not sure. Flew out of Cobar on the 24th Dec.
Here's a couple more

Yes, they did tend to suffer a bit from vapourising but not as bad as these

In the truck sales industry they were almost universally regarded as Australian Army Cab Over, and Australian Civilian Cab Over. Both acronyms were pronounced as Akk-owe. Differentiation was high doors and/or split windscreen. The next model was called "new cab Acco" in the sales yards.

Hi there Bushie and John
Keep them comming - what a great few pictures.

My first trip interstate with the Fire Service (SA Country Fire Service) was back in 1994, and was a fairly yound lad back then. We were stationed at the Richmond collage.
We were doing a huge back burn - and can remember we had brought over 20-30 appliances over from SA (fairly flash fire appliances in there days).......well getting back to the story half way along the back burn we came across an old ex army 6x6 fire truck (it even had the old lay done front windscreen) - and we were shocked as it still was an active fire appliance.
We have a policy in SA - no active front line fire appliance is to exceed 20 years old, there is a a few exception after 20 years some are coverted to bulk water tankers.
Well since 1994 - theres not many years we havent headed interstate, but with the way things are going in SA you might have to help us this year.

I always understood them to refer to Australian A-series Cab Over and Australian C-series Cab over, analogous to the contemporary bonneted trucks which went AA, AB, C. (not sure why the C series they dropped the A - and added a zero to all the numbers).

Pretty rough spot, that. There used to be a really good ex-army 2a near Heathcote Hall. Know if its still around?

G'day Bushie :)
That pic in post 25 certainly does show a mixed bag of vehicles from what looks like a 6 cyl SWB (front left column) down the line to a Series 1 on to a Ford Thames 800 van and a K series Ford truck with a Kombi at the rear, the other line is almost as interesting with a 4 cyl SWB followed by a WW11 jeep and then a S1 H/top, the 6cyl Swb and wagon would have been the new kids in that group,I can remember the fires in the National Park areas and the tragic loss of fire crew/crews when those Austin trucks vapourised in what was later to be called firestorms, mid 70's from memory. great historical pics particulary for those younger folk which are used to seeing large newish vehicles and helicopter water bombers, all overseen by satellite imagery.
cheers

From around 69/70 as best I can find out although the ones with the vehicles in line are probably a bit earlier.

Eckersley ford is (was) about 1km upstream from Lake Eckersley, everything of the west of the river is part of the Holsworthy Range area. The track through the range is now defunct, the army used to come through in APCs and turn around on the waterboard road.

Pretty sure there were only 4cyl vehicles in amongst that lot, we only had the one 6cyl in the fleet and it was a long wheelbase.
The fires in the national park you refer to were the early 80s but Bedfords, no Austins in our fleet. (any in the pics would have been visitors to the field day)

Just the remove the confusion, the photos in post 25 are late 60s/early 70s. The earlier post with helicopter and holden were taken in Dec 1974.
