Just saw the episode of THE Force behind the lines.
A D3 driver towing a caravan pulls up next to a police car on the Nullabor about 200 kms out from Eucla.
Has has a suspected broken hip but that's not all !!! He is one legged and one armed as well.
The has to drive the rest of the way to the nearest town becuase he is stuck in the driver's seat because of the pain.
What an astonishing man to be able to do that wqith the pain he must have been in.:o

Fell out of bed in his caravan. Don't know why his wife didn't drive though, as after they RFDS him the wife drove back

Apparently he was in too much pain when he tried sitting on the left hand side.

My 17yo and I saw it and then I told him about this post.
Pardon our sense of humour but your forum name matched with this thread is a classic! :D

The Constable had trouble raising the clinic on his satphone.
It might have helped if he'd had the antenna pointing towards the sky instead of the ground:p

As with any antenna the 'fat' side should point toward the signal source - hence he had it pointing the way. ;)

Actually, No!
Having owned a SatPhone for approx 7 years now, I can assure you the antenna works much better at the other angle!;)
(as is confirmed in the user manuals for the phones! Pg41 of the Iridium 9505a user manual "The antenna should be vertical to the ground when you talk on the phone")
It may work 'fat side' horizontal if the satellite was directly overhead. On the Eyre Highway that is not the case.
My 9505a even has a graphic that appears in the display when first switched on showing you how to deploy the antenna.

He may have found the drivers seat uncomfortable but he also had the bed from which he fell to choose from.

One thing that I noticed , it's not a good place to have an accident. Have a bad car crash and you could be lying there for hours until professional help arrives. And when time is of essence it wouldn't be a good feeling.
An Ambo 200 kms away, the RFDS is out somewhere else, scarey:( mobile phones wouldn't work. Cd would be relay from user to user
You would feel like help was coming from the moon

I actually thought one of the Iridium satellites was overhead about Kalgoorlie - hence my reasoning the man in blue was right for his location.
I agree you are right to say he only had it in the right spot if the satellite was directly overhead and I have no problem saying I was wrong as obviously from what you say it is not.

I checked it out: There's 66 satellites and they orbit pole to pole, so they're on the move all the time.
So I was a bit wrong too when I said the Eyre hwy wouldn't have one overhead. Obviously there are times when one would be overhead.
I usually get very good signal, but it does drop out every now and then.
Before the Iridium I had globalstar and it went from really good to really bad over a couple of years.

Gotta ask, "Not thinking right due to pain or painkillers, or balls of steel?"
Damned good landing by the pilot, but I could not see the point in turning the plane around, they could have just driven the ambo up to it, and taken off in the same direction as they landed.

Yes, "Known ground" is a consideration, but it was the pilots first ever landing on a road, so in reality, how well did he know it???????

Maybe it was them I was thinking of - Mt Isa and Kalgoorlie were the places where their 2 low level birds were overhead.
