Hi there all, this is first ever go at this great resource. I bought the LR branded track and lockable cross bars for the MYO8, the standard holding down bolts securing accessories to the sport style cross bars from Thule, Rola and Rhino don't fit in the track, has anyone solved this  ?

Many thanks,
Coldy

Hi Coldy

I think this was discussed on the D3.co.uk web site some time ago. Try doing a search there.

I used the Rhino tracks to as they do a short track for the front that lets me run extra bars.

Sorry I could not be of more help.

Cheers
Rob

I just bought roof racks and a cage for a new MY09 D3.
The roof rails came from Rhino as did the Sportz bars.
They fitted really well - I was very surprised!
The cage came from Rola, which came in a kit with 4 u-bolt attachments that fitted nicely to the Rhino bars,
The cage weighs only 17.5 kgs, so I take it off after a trip and leave the bars on the roof.
They were all available in black, which is nice as well,
They just fit 2 x 20 litre fuel containers and a 2nd spare wheel.

see below,
regards,

Wyperfield

Hi Wyperfield, any chance of a close up pic of the roof rack track, I am especially interested in the height of the track from the roof, as I want to ensure the track I choose has as little wind noise as possible and does not protrude too much as I will travel without the rack or bars 95% of the time. Thanks in advance!

Rhino Rack - Roof Racks for LAND ROVER Discovery 3 4WD (http://www.rhinorack.com.au/Vehicle_LAND%20ROVER_Discovery%203_4091.aspx)

The catalogue I saw yesterday actually had a picture of a D3.

I am about to use these Rhino Rack - Platform Rack (http://www.rhinorack.com.au/AccSubCategory_Platform-Racks_Page_1_Accessory_Platform-Rack_99_6.aspx) instead of a basket to reduce wind noise....

The Rhino Rack ones are actually lower profile than the LR ones.

Thanks for that.
As an update to my original post, Rhino make a square nut that fits nicely inside the Cross Bar and secures things via a 20mm Long x 6mm dia stainless steel bolt that has an Allen key cup head.

The Rhino rack you reference looks better than the LR version as it seems to sit closer to the roof line.

Cheers all for your responses,
Coldy

Hi Wyperfield,

Parden my ignorance of D3 MY09 model, which I have a TDV6 S.

On the roof there are two black strips running down the length of the roof. Are you saying that the Rhino kit you have bought come with the necessary pieces to mount a pair of roof bars on which you then mount the Rola cage?

I am about to buy a pair of roof bars for my TDV6 and is looking for instructions and advice on how to do it myself. Do you still have that Rhino model number?

Do you or anyone know a link showing how to install roof bars on TDV6? I did not buy one fitted with the standard LR bar and rail system.

Thanks.

Rola make roof rails to fit the D3, not sure about Rhino, but I'd imagine so. You can alternatively just buy the generic Rola roof rail (_much_ cheaper), weld or screw ally U channel to the underside to clear the roof ridge and use that.

They also do a small track for above driver as well. Using taller cross bars it gives full length loading.

Thanks for the advice. One newbie question: When I look at my TDV6 S's roof black strips, there appears to be several 'holes' with some plastic covers covering them. Are they the anchor points mentioned on Rola's web site for Discovery 3? What is the best way to take those covers off?

So that means I need to get the rails and screw them down on these anchor points and then buy the roof bar.

Thanks.

Rover.

Hi Rover
Yes thats it, the mounting hole covers come off, I think they are only tape,
The rails don't go all the way to the front so need to cut the black strip, rhino also have a small rail to fit the lower roof section, real small just long enough to fit foot of bar, and again cut black strip.
Cheers Ken

My brother in law has the D3 with the factory LR Rails. I will be putting the Rhino rails on my D4. We want to share the crossbars at various times.

When I talked with the guys at Roof Rack World at Artartmon, they were really helpful and knew their stuff - the had even just installed the Rhino rails that morning and I saw both side by side. :)

Anyway, the guy said that the Rhino foot mount can't be used on both factory and Rhino rail - you have to choose the right one. BUT the Thule foot mount can fit into either rail - just a matter of changing the bolt (and he would supply both to me).

BTW - those guys are fast at installing stuff on the spot, and know their stuff.

So there are a couple of options for you.
