Anyone here into African or Indian or Arabic (modern) music?

Much to my children's horror and listening pain, I quite like African & Indian music

So far I have discovered African artists like:
o Tinariwen
o Amadou & Mariam
o Lucky Dube (am only 50:50 on this style)
o Habib Koite

and Indian (Bhangra) artists like:
o Bally Sagoo
o Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan
o Nitin Sawhney
o Natacha Atlas (although this is perhaps arabic indian ...)

The only Arabic stuff I have found are chillout/groove mix albums.

Also love the Buddah Bar and Ministry of Sound types of compilations, if anyone has heard of these (UK based mix series).

Anyone here got any recommendations that fit in with the above type of artists? Perhaps the broad category is "World Music" with a beat.....

Guess I'll be surprised if I get any replies, but there's few guys (like BBC) who've spent some time out in various parts, so just thought I'd enquire.

Thanks
David

I'm with you 100% - and yes I get beaten into putting some crap commercial station on when I'd rather be listening to something interesting.

I'm actually staggered & disappointed at how narrow kids' tastes are - maybe it's a peer group thing, anyhow here ya go:

Salif Keita
Angelique Kidjo
Prem Joshua & Manish Vyas
Sheila Chandra
Najmah
Rachid Taha
Ravi Shankar
Telek (Papua New Guinea)
Bhundu Boys

...and have a look at these too :D

Indian Lounge mp3s, Indian Lounge music downloads, Indian Lounge songs from eMusic.com (http://www.emusic.com/album/Various-Indian-Lounge-MP3-Download/11237016.html)

Boy! That's about 10 times the responses I thought I'd get.

This is a very varied interest forum :D

Thanks for all those artists names. I will now go looking to see what I can find from your suggestions.

Its too bad a lot of people wont listen to other cultures music,, I've had a wide and varied interest in all sorts of music, right from when I was in my early teens, every thing from "Bad Company" through to "Classical"
When watching movies/documentries, you quite often here awesome sound tracks, but they can be hard to track down. Some of the American Indian music is excellent too,

The best thing was being in India a couple of years ago when they won against us in cricket,, sitting on the balcomy listening to them partying was just insane,,, you could here all the music going right through the town,, (Nasic is where I was),, they were also celebtating their Elephant God at the time,, so there was partying through the day,,
An incredible experience, and one I'll never forget,,:D

Check out David Rodigan on KISS FM online, we listen to him at work on a monday morning as his show is live in London, brilliant start to a new week. Plenty of reggae to keep you happy and some of the guests are bombed out

This is an excellent album:
Atman Ambient World Music (http://www.atmanmusic.com/index.php?pag=conteudo&id_conteudo=2&idmenu=3)
(India Club & Lounge)

There appears to be a link on that page for a free download now too.
Failing that, I actually bought the two CD's a while ago, and have a CD burner.
Now, if you were to give me a postal addy....

Juluka: South africa from the crazy days in Joburg and seweto nightclubs in the apartheid days of 1980s (was not so fashionable to go to African nightclubs and considered dangerous in those days!!!)
also Myriam Makeba, Alpha Bondy, Salif Keita, Patrick Victor, Princess Erika to name a few from all over africa managed to even get some songs off Youtube , brought back memories!!! as did some of the names mentioned here
Lots of good artists from SA when we used to go to concerts in Joburg but they never mad it outside SA:)

ah I love tribal/ethnic music. Which I guess is slightly odd seeing as I'm only 22 ;)
Started getting into it when I was doing lots of desert driving around WA with my mate; who happens to be from Sith Efrika. He put in a CD full of Afrikaan tribal music and it totally set the scene for cruising through sand dunes and cost line. Hahaha. Our only regret was we were not driving a Land Rover.

But really, nothing beats 'Africa' by Toto for cultural cruising tunes :)
