View Full Version : Anyone know a cheap source for 3.9 V8 V belt tensioner pulleys?

I had a look at my V belt tensioners yesterday and replaced one with a Maxidrive one that I purchased from Graeme Cooper several years ago as it is tinkling. The other one is not too flash either after 185KK.

Does anyone know whether anyone took over the Vbelt tensioners when Maxidrive shut down?
Has anyone else got any alternatives?

I have of all things Diahatsu Charade Turbo tensioner under the house which looks like it can be butchered to fit to the OEM bracket. I will talk to my mate with the lathe tonight to see if he wants some practice.

BTW I did a google on the pulley with no result. I finally found the part number and price at the Rovers North site. RND 391 and gulp USD 349!!!!!!!

There is a Oz company that makes lots of tensioner pulleys but no RRC or Disco 1 V belt ones . It looks like a VN Commodore one could be adapted to the RRC bracket maybe with a sleeve and a thread cut , but I havent taken the RRC one apart to see what the shaft diameter is yet.

MR Automotive sell the maxidrive tensioners. I bought a replacement pulley from them yesterday as the bearing in mine siezed which in turn destroyed the pulley itself.

Their number is 07 3284 6688

I'm not sure what the v-belt equiped v8's have as a tensioner pulley but i know for a serpentine belted engine you can use a commodore pully, vr/vs i beleive, just take it into repco or another store alike and see it they can match something up.

If it's only the bearing that's gone, I got two new ones from the local bearing man $8 delivered to my door.
I was told that you have to replace the whole thing, I pulled mine off and figured that it wasn't too dificult to do the bearing. It's not.
I now have a spare sitting in my tool draw:D

Yep!
Just get the bearing number off the bearing, lightly heat the pulley (oven works well) and just press or drive it out. These are held in mainly with a circlip but can be stubborn to remove if in situ for a while.

My car is a JA ie V belts not multi rib.

The tensioner is a sealed assembly , The part number is as I quoted.

Thanks for all the replies re maxi drive.
BTW an Australian company named Precision parts makes a Nu-Line brand pulley specifically for the multi rib.
