Hi all,
I had the P38 converted a while back when the 'rush' was on and had the Lovato vapor conversion done.
I had it all checked out after the motor swap and the computer was set to run a 4.0L via a Rovacom.
I had been trying to run it on petrol since the swap and all was running fine. Then the other day the car would not hold idle on petrol.
I have just had the car back from a reputable LPG mechanic. The report back is that it is probably the MAF (RR 4.0 and 4.6 GEMS)(seems to be a common problem) as when he had it connected the motor was being swamped with fuel.
The Mechanic has now set it up to only run on gas and he was impressed how well it runs on gas alone. He has adjusted the mix and its running well, though I have some hesitation on only running it on gas.
For obvious reasons I want to get it fixed, can't leave the city! Though before I rush out and get a new MAF I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience?
Or does any one have a tested MAF that they want taken off their hands?
I had recently changed to a K&N filter, this by any chance could have something to do with it, not plausible but worth a thought?
Is there a way to solve the issue with out having to out it on a Rovacom or the likes?
Please do not advise converting to a sequential conversion because the advice will fall on deaf ears and empty pockets! :p

Known issue with K&N filters and the cleaning oil used on them blocking up the MAF sensor.
I've removed my K&N and gone back to a paper filter, but might go back to the K&N one day for comparison.
Easy enough to clean the MAF sensor(s) with some isopropyl alcohol spray from JayCar, a q-tip (very gently) and a spray can of compressed air (lightly).
Cheap and easy. Worth trying before thinking about a new MAF.

Big thanks to PaulP38a.
Got out the MAF cleaner and gave it a good spray, then put the old (in good condition) paper filter in and every thing was peachy again.
Would like to know if anyone has had a similar problem with the K & N filter?
Half of me feels that it's not the culprit, so I would be willing to give it another go?

I had a chat with Paul about this a month or so ago.
I have run a K&N in my Falcon (V8 with MAF) for the last 5 years with no problems at all. Had them fitted to RRC's, carby 3.5 and an injected 3.5, in the Middle east
I have never used the K&N oil, just a light coat of WD40 after giving it a clean. EMPHASIS ON LIGHT COAT (more like a mist of spray), from about 30cm away so if you were to spray your hand it'd be just covered.

It was a brand new filter, I had not serviced it in any way. Tempted to put back in and see what happens.

Hey Kalincho - glad to hear that cleaning the MAF fixed the problem. Happy to have helped :)
Regarding the K&N filter - I will be giving mine another go at some point in the future too. As eb220 suggests (well, sorta), it seems that K&N oil and Rangie MAF's don't mix. WD-40 sounds like a goer. Is there anything that WD-40 can't do? ;)

I have put the K&N back in and gave the box a good clean at the same time, with no WD40 and will see how it goes.
Its going in for a service on Monday week, will get the heads up from the mechanic.
I really need to drive another P38 to know what mine should and shouldn't be doing!

You're welcome to drive mine, Kalincho - but its a fair way to come! Mind you a good drive to Perth would be good for me, and I'd love to do it. Can't do it at present tho.

If you look in the "WA AULROians group" section you will see constant trips being organised ... Good way to meet "like minded folks"

I'll probably be over in Perth again in a couple of weeks... haven't been there since last month... shame I can't take the P38A as check-in luggage or I'd gladly bring mine over for you to drive :p
One day I'll do that trip by road... in a Rangie of course.
Have you had a chat with Andrew Barbara of Hard Range? He might have some suggestions and is in Perth somewhere.

I'm running a KN on my 99 4.0l with no probs. I do clean the MAF every service with some alcohol spray. I have also cut out the very front bottom of my airbox for better flow. This also helps when running gas so it doesn't backfire and blow the box apart.
What may have happened is the MAF may have been dirty to start with and then some oil from the filter made it worse?
I've had better economy and take off since I put the KN filter in.

I had the girl serviced by Beechboro 4x4 and asked Marc to provide a hit list of all that is wrong with the car.
later that afternoon, I had a relatively short but possibly expensive list of things that need attention, but nothing that couldn't wait until the next service. At 200thousand km,
A honest and pleasant experience from a mechanic that loves the bloody things as much as we do!
Took the car south, K and N and all and she drove like a dream,
I was warned to take the K and N filter off if I was going on red dirt as the the filters can pack up quickly with the iron deposits.
So all is relatively happy again, going the upgraded bilstien steering damper on monday and will keep my eyes peeled for a right hand fog light on ebay.
