What's the difference between upto MA and MA onwards rear dampers? Is it differences to account for the addition of sway bars or is the mounting different and one from one model won't fit the other?

The only real difference between LA/MA+ D1 rear suspension is that MA have the two mounts for sway bars on the axle tubes. The shocks are in the same places, which means you can swap whole earlier D1 or RR axles if need be (Although the internals of the axles are a little different) . The only rider to this point is that late 70's RR axles had one shock mount to the rear of the axle, but you can move the upper mount if you really need to. It's D2 stuff that is hard to swap, and even then you could use D1 shocks if you were desperate
