I just need a set of "roughy" tyres for the County..
There are quite a few of these on Ebay etc at reasonable prices.
What does red crosses painted on them mean? Is it just the Armys way of marking them for disposal?

The XX means its not for use by the ADF.
It generally means the tyre is defective in one or more ways and it can be anything from the tyre is out of date, work out, punctured in the side wall or shoulder, broken bead, wont balance correctly ad on infanitum.
They might be ok for a trailer or for offroad work but generally they wont pass muster for road use.

XX means unserviceable, Not sure when but a while ago the ADF switched onto the fact that a lot of their tires were out of date. As such a heap have been disposed of. Obviously a WH@S issue.

Unrepairable-unserviceable-for disposal.
These are often found on disposed equipment.

I go to the auctions at Bandiana where there are regularly multiple pallets of 10 of these tyres.
They go for about $350 -> $1000 a pallet. I've never coughed up for them because I only had the disco and no spare rims.
Now I have Doc and the county, I'll look at getting a couple next auction.
I'll let you know when the auction comes up next

What he said.
No manufacturer will warranty their tyres beyond 7 years (IIRC) so fleet managers have had to dispose of plenty of tyres.
By warranty i don't mean replacement, just performance/safety
