I have a vibration in the car that is steadly getting worse, it starts at around 65 to70kph and is at it's worst at 90kph.
Now while driving along, if I turn the wheell left it gets worse, but if I turn right it stops, now just turning the wheel without going around a corner stops it, so to me it seems steering related, can anyone give me some clues as to where to look or what could be the cause.
Baz.

My guess is a tie rod end that has worn. I have had one that only show'd movement at a certain angle and the only way I could find it was to place the car the ground and get a mate to turn the steering wheel with the motor running. Only happened under load as with the weight off the front end on a hoise there was no movement at all.

Oops, shows how much I know, I thought everyone had swivelling balls. Hope it's not too uncomfortable for you.

take it your shocks weren't loose then baz......did you check your steering box and power steering pump?
but i might be thinking tie rods perhaps one of them is seizing, do they have grease nipples on them? mine don't but some do.

Yeah everything was pretty well tight enough, I don't think it's the steering box because of the fact it goes away if I turn the steering wheel right it goes away and the fact I checked that first;)
I am thinking it could also be an engine mount, I was told it could be on the way out.

Try looking for play in the UJs on the front prop shaft. 90ks is a common speed for this to appear and about 110ks if the rear ones are worn.

spot on i reckon ,aswell check your rubber ring on the tail shaft just before it connects to the rear diff, if it is torn or distorted severe vibration does occur .when turning the disco, it puts preesure on the rubber ring which will mean the vibration can go away

Baz,
Have you had the wheels balanced recently? Even if you have, a weight may have been lost.
Quite an unusual condition, but I recently discovered a rear shock was badly damaged and had excessive bump resistance. With that shock replaced with an old one, a front wheel inbalance and pulling to the left problem basically disappeared.

Checked both and seem OK to me, but I am going too take the front shaft off to positively rule it out this weekend.

Don't have the Rotoflex coupling any more.

Hi Graeme no I haven't, but I am thinking of it after I rotate the tyres.
Shocks were checked after I replaced broken one, they seem OK.

Will be replacing it soon, don't think it's the cause though, but you never know.

I dont know I had real vibration issues with my car...at certain speeds. once the swivel preload was done on mine it was heaps better...but still vibs at 110 changed my damper and it was all gone.
they can be a big culprit for vibs in a car I think and often one of those things over looked

Hey mate
May sound like a silly suggestion but check your front wheel nuts
I had a similar thing happen and was wondering what it was. It was only until a fella at work pointed out I was missing a wheel nut that I realised it was the problem :(
Hope that helps

About a month ago I had a vibration that responded the same as you describe in regards to steering left and right. While trying to figure that one out, I did what I thought was a bit of completely unrelated maintenance.....I replaced the flogged out front radius arm to axle bushes. Vibration gone. Who would have thought...though the worn bushes were the rear of axle ones, which allowed the diff pinion to drop a fair bit increasing the UJ angle.
This happened on my County, but it may be worth checking the bushes with a screw driver on yours.
Cheers
Andre

First thing I checked, even removed the wheels and refitted them just to be sure.
wheel bearing, ball joint, steering tie rod.
Yes Dave will be checking them thoroughly on Friday arvo.
Dave I keep forgetting that fuel filter, I'll give Bob a ring and arrange a replacement for him when they are home.

Yes I did think of them as I had flogged out and bent rear ones a while ago, I will be checking the fronts Friday with some expert help.
Thanks for the ideas

OK a further development in this vibration saga, I removed the front drive shaft last night and this morning I drove to work in two wheel drive:eek: apart from it handles like crap, the vibration actually feels worse:mad:
I guess that's one more thing to rule out.
The other is as soon as your turn the steering wheel right it goes away completely still:unsure::unsure:
Going to look further today

I'm no mechanical guru but it sounds a lot like a wheel bearing to me from a similar experience I had some years ago with a RRC.

Today it was confirmed that the wheel bearing is one of the causes of the sound, there is also a poofteenth of movement in the top ball joint as well:rolleyes:
