Hi all, seems like there is a rush on gearbox questions at the moment.

I have a bad feeling that the syncho on second is knacked. Can there be any other reason that it is very hard (and grindy) to change down into second on the LT77 box? It literallly happened in one afternoon, drove from Syd to Adel earlier in the week with no probs or unusual sounds, then a the end of teh week was heading into a servo and second didn't want to play nice.

Also since we are now in Adelaide can anyone recommend a mechanic to have a look (somewhere to find a gearbox ). And any guesses on cost for a recond box?

Thanks.

Triumph Rover Spares - The World's Largest Land Rover Dismantler (http://www.triumphroverspares.com.au/) I would have to recommend these guys they do a good price and have everything new and used.. Do not go to Black Forrest Land Rover they will rip you off beyond a joke.

Does it do it hot or cold or both??
Wrong oil might be a long shot but could be cheaper than you think

Mine's been like that for 3 years now - still going strong. Just need to really slow down before engaging second and it'll slip in nice. Try and do it with some revs in, and it'll crunch. It still goes in, just needs a little force - which isn't doing it any favours :)

Cheers

Had the same problem years ago turned out to be a blocked filter in the transmission. The inside of the LT77 was painted from the factory and over time the heat from the trans caused the paint come off and circulate with the oil, most likley a bit of paint was caught up in the sincro.
This was in a 92 200 Tdi 110 and i drained the oil flushed the trans a few times then changed the oil and checked the filter every 10,000 K's took 3 oil changes and 30,000 K's for the filter to stay clean.
This was a known problem by the LR dealer in Perth. The filter is easy to check as can be removed from the outside of the transmission unlike R380 Box which is internal.
