how dodgy is the stamping on my 2A
Q. how many digits should be in the number?
i picked up my 2A today, no rego sticker, on the receipt the guy has noted the following chassis number
Q1NVAAA71Y023
the best i can make out is
VAAA71Y023
the zero is stamped above the Y and the 2 and it looks like they forgot it first time around, there are a couple of marks before the V but i can not make them out
thanks

That looks like a VIN, not a Series 2/2a Land Rover chassis number at all. Perhaps it is one of the VIN allocated by the RTA when they couldn't find the original chassis number.
Check the RHS front spring hanger instead of the usual LHS rear spring shackle bracket!

That is a number assigned by Qld government when they could not find the number, probably because they didn't know where to look. It should be stamped on the chassis somewhere - heaven knows where though!

JohnSeries 2a built in Australia should have their chassis number stamped on the LHS rear spring shackle bracket.
Series 2a built in the UK have their chassis number stamped on the RHS front spring hanger (below the bumper bar).
All this is dependent upon their not being any chassis repairs that have obliterated or removed the number.

Yes - but that is where the factory stamped it, not Qld Transport! I know about this because my 2a has a number assigned by NSW RTA because they could not find the number - and their number was stamped on the chassis above the RH rear wheel. But that does not mean that Qld Transport would use the same location! It could be anywhere.

you need to "find" a replacement chassis that is BER (beyond economical repair). There is bound to be a rusty one around somewhere with a legable chassis number

JohnYes - just because the Qld mob couldn't find the original number doesn't mean that it isn't there and weeds has located part of the Qld issued number, however I would still be trying to identify the original number and looking in the factory locations first. That way you know which animal you have got.

Q1NVAAA71Y023 stamped on the chassis
143901556 stamped on the spring hanger bit welded to the chassis thanks to buffing disc

Are you sure the last digit on the engine number is a 5? it should have a suffix letter at the end.
Maybe a gearbox number may help as well? but you have to remove the tunnel to have a decent look (i did).
-EDIT- Here are the numbers from my '71 2a SWB hardtop if it is any help...
Chassis: 243 213 66H (11/71)
engine: 241 548 80A
gearbox: 255 059 36F
I got the chassis number from a plate in the engine bay, and the gearbox and engine no's from their namesakes.

Compliance plate makes it out to be a series 2a, 88" 1962-1971 export model.
Spring hanger number for Chassis is series 2, 88" 1959 export model.
And, as has been already mentioned, the Qxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx number has been issued by the QLD transport dept, when they couldn't find the number on the spring hanger.
Looks to be made up of 2 and 2a parts (not that it's a bad thing though).

Congratulations Kelvin. You are officially a Series II (not IIA) owner. ;)
As Darky has said, it's a '59. I had a rush of blood to the head and check to see if it was a Command Recon, but it isn't in REMLR...

well bitsa is all registered, rear plate is on not sure if i will put the front one on:p
i'm going to refer to her as a 2A 12/71 model as that what she is registered as although they wanted to put series 3  into there system even though the compliance plate says 2A
even though i located the correct chassis number number i could not convince qld transport to use it instead they stuck with the one they issued years ago, even though the girl that come out to check the number could not read all the letters/numbers:angel:
its strange using the lap seat belts and not retractable, i feel kinda naked. will look into installing 3 point retractable belts....
