The clutch pedal has always sort of picked up about half way.Today all of a sudden it picks up right by the floor.Still enough to get it into gears when stationary. No leaks from the master cylinder that I can see. Is the pressure plate on its last legs ? Its a 78 model.

Thanks........

Hope the gearbox dont have to come out.

Most likely an hydraulic problem. The master cylinder can not work even without leaking, and it could be the slave cylinder, although the master is more likely.

The symptom does not match any problem with the clutch itself. There is a very slight problem of it being the clutch fork, but although common with Defenders, I have not heard of it with S3s.

Thanks John. Had a looky at the master cylinder and the rod is flip flopping all over the place.Cant belive it still works enough to get any gears. Will just replace the master cylinder. Still has the fluid in there and no leaks.

If the rod is "flip flopping, perhaps all that is needed is to adjust and tighten the nuts on it? But could be teh piston is sticking, in which case, yes, new M/C - around $50 or less from any brake or trailer specialist.
