View Full Version : Naming the 'fender

Ok then, I need some help, although it is not of the urgent variety.

I have just registered my new (95) and first defender in S.A. and was allocated the plate S851-ADY. This has brought up the matter of names.

Now my first inclination is to give her a female name, mainly cause I keep referring to her as "her" and "she". My sisters on the other hand want me to give it a male name as they consider anything else to be an insult to femininity. My Grandmother calls it The Beast and some other female friends call it a Man's Truck.

So here are my thoughts so far after getting the plates, either Sadie, Lady, or Adeline if its a girl or Andy, Randy, etc if its going to be a guy.

Has anyone got any other suggestions? Also are your Defenders male or female or both?

I call my Defe Rustic and "Sieve" was the other name in mind because the "excellent" sealed body and mechanical components :D

Darth Vader comes to mind as the thing is bloody evil at times, and it calls me over to the dark side. ( I love the thing though):twisted::twisted::twisted::twiste d:

The name you decide on is obviously personal - but for me, my Defender is a fella. But I'm trying to buy a Series 2 at the moment - and she's definitely a lady! Good luck with your new buddy. :)

I'm liking Sadie. ;)

Scallops - I always thought that cars should have girls names, until I realised that my cars to date have been named "Gus", "Monty", "Harold", "Ambrose" and "Austin"!

Hello Shonky - yeah, I have always thought so too. But when I got my Defender - it just said, "G'day mate, you and I are going to have a lifetime of fun together now". And then - I swear - it scratched "it's" nuts! :p

My daughter christened mine Dug! I have no idea why she just thought it looked like a Douglas, so every morning as I head off to work I get a kiss on the cheek and a say hi to Dug.

I'm back in W.A. now and the fender is at the folks place in S.A. :( Now for some decisions. I think it is definitely a girl ... every time I refer to it, its still always as "she" or "her".

I think its going to be a choice between Sadie and Sandy, but I'm tending towards the first one.

Cal415, I wonder if Landrover would make a badge like that. :p Never know, I can just see a limited addition front grill.

nothing wrong with a randy girl. :)

another, how about Brandy? hearing of a girl named brandy always makes me think of some sexy stripper! :)

The kids and my brother decided it should be "White Thunder". Why I don't know, haven't done any major mods to the old girl. When I put the muddies on for some fun I get "Is White Thunder going to play in the mud with her GUM-BOOTS". Afterwards they help me to put on her DANCING shoes.

Cheers,

I owned a series 3 wagon years ago and her name was Mandy. My Defender is definitely male and scored the name Bill.

Mine is an older 110 trayback truck by the name of Murdoch. I'd just returned from the hills and valleys of Highland Scotland after a short trip and Murdoch just seemed to suit a large square shaped no-nonsense lunker of a thing suited to running in the hills and valleys of NZ... :D

Mine are definitely both boys.. I'm not sure why, but they are rather gruff and how many girls to you know that smell like grease and diesel*?

They are Brutus and Hercules. Brutus is the black ex mil 2A in the avatar.. bit rough :) Herc has the Isuzu.

Sadie sounds good, but what about Sandy? Sandy the Landy, anyone?

*If you do, then PM me their details ;):wasntme:

my 130 is named The Kubota as in the tractor

my mates reckon its just like a tractor that it go's and go's :D
also has the sound of a tractor ...........

Have to agree that it sounds somewhat like a tractor, although mine sounds exactly like the Volvo F12 semi that we have on the farm when I put my foot down and the turbo kicks in. :D

NME, thats strange, I always thought that the series LWB utes where male. Then again I thought defenders where to and I just went and bought a female by the looks of it.

I have decided that she will have to be Sadie, Sandy just doesn't seem to fit quite right.

My '84 120 is 'The Rattler'. I hope it is a girl, I send that much time on my back under it, it just wouldn't seem right the other way...

Mandy was a station wagon not a ute......

I didn't think there were any rules as to boy or girl with any particular model, to me it's always just been a feeling that you have about it.

The County is affectionately known as Rocinante,

after Don Quixote's faithful nag

(I have recently discovered that the author John Steinbeck called his camper this as well, but this is not sufficient reason to change it)

Nice vehicle NME, sorry the ute part was a slip up. I had just always felt that they were male. Do you still have Mandy?

My number plate is 533LUT.

According to a young female friend who is into "Plate speak", 533 = SEE. Hence, my plate is SEE-LUT. Which is probably what I'll end up calling it if it ever lets me down!!

Truck, Barge, Deefer, Sally (after the diff), Buzz (short for b'stard), Tonka, Beast have all had guernsey's.

I remember a volksy camper called bruinhilde (ask JLC from Tassie) and even a cat called cucumber!!

Can call it male or female name, but a square built unit like a landy with a female name would remind me of a russian hammer thrower......ya!

Scallops - I always thought that cars should have girls names, until I realised that my cars to date have been named "Gus", "Monty", "Harold", "Ambrose" and "Austin"!

I have an Austin Healey called Ruby and she's very much a "she", as I thought all vehicles were....but when I was test driving the Defender all I could think about was being in a tank.....it just felt like I could drive over anything....and I recalled a story I'd heard about Viscount Montgomery of Alamein who had his own command tank.....before I knew it I was referring to the Defender as "Monty"...and it's stuck solid.

Co-incidentally, Viscount Montgomery died on the day I was born. I think that's a sign....

Hmmm the name debate still:o:)

ours is RED 130 for obvious reasons...it is RED and a 130:)

though all our other trucks are female for SWB and male for LWB...for obvious reasons;)...there a lot who disagree with this notion but that is my opinion and I will stick with it:p:D

Mine is called 'the grey ghost'. It is grey and … well that's it.

My ute was originally nicknamed Kimberley because that is where it is going to end up. But recently it's had the moniker of 'Wolf Creek' or 'the truck'.

Question is..is it bad luck to rename the vehicle? like it is supposed to be bad luck if you rename a ship?
