View Full Version : Staffy's .......

Had to take out 10 year old Staffy to the Vet yesterday.:(

On Wednesday he was lethargic, not interested in going for a walk or playing ball, his tail wouldn't wag, he was generally miserable. He was still eating a little bit and drinking water now and again, but we could tell all was not OK. Even his bright, sparkling, mischievous eyes were dull. We were genuinely worried.

So...

After poking, prodding and temperature taking, the Vet said he had a bacterial infection in his gut and put him on a one week course of anti-biotics and a strict diet of steamed diced chicken breast fillets…bits of fat and bone particles removed…and rice. (small portions a couple of times a day)……... Apparently chicken breast meat is easily digested.

OK no probs ….except the dog is eating more expensive cuts than we normally do.

Anyhow, he is making a remarkable recovery (thank goodness). :D But it was funny this afternoon when I gave him his chicken & rice …I got a look of disgust from him…..I could just about read his mind…I reckon he was saying…

“Why in the hell are you giving me this invalid food… where’s my usual stuff”

Last week he chased & caught a rabbit and proceeded to eat a large portion of it…fur on… (maybe that was the bacterial problem). We have lots of rabbits around here.

Anyhow, six days of steamed breast fillet, rice & anti-biotics to go and then I reckon he will be saying……

“Be werry, werry qwiet….I’m hunting wabbits…..

AND WHERE’S MY BALL !!!!!

Don't worry, we lost a few hours sleep worrying.
But he's all good so far.:D

Not really sure how we'll keep him away from digging up old bones etc. Hasn't been a problem so far, so hope it's just a "one off".

And yes....Staffy's are just great.......

Also had the Vet give him the "once over' while he was there and he got a clean bill of health.....apart from the tummy bug.

The Vet called him a "dignified old fellow".

Must take him down the coast soon.

i'd hate to see my Staffy (Chad) go through that ordeal
but i will say the chicken breats wouldn't bother him at all ;)
my dog will eat anything just as long as i hand it to him.........

Staffies are certainly top of the pile with me...impossible for me to currently own a dog but, my last two were Staffies... a bitch, and then a dog. She was the most intelligent, obedient dog I had ever had.

He...LOL..he was a hand-me-down, a magnificent animal but, as far as obedient...NUP. Everything with him had to accord with the rule of the 3 x F's....a Feed, a Fight and...you know the rest. He was a mate though, and he could get in and out of the Series 2A without having to be lifted, so he rode everywhere with me.

I do not have digital photos of them. I'd urge everyone to post any photos of their Staffies they might have.

Back when he was younger, Cougar (the dog above), was able to jump up on the front wing, or through the drivers window of a 110 from the ground. He also loves sitting on the tank of my XR and going for a hoon.

Mum spoils that dog already, chicken breast, what next? smoked sammon, or that queenfish in the freezer?

Yes, very agile dogs. My bitch could walk along the top rail of our wooden side fence..stepping over each post as she came to it...clever.

Good to see its all sorted:)

My wifes sisters 14yr old staffy wasnt so lucky,a tick was under its top lip,& it was too late to save her:(

Our dog looked off a while back & every time his tail was touched he yelped.A trip to the vet & he had an enlarged prostrate:eek::(

It sorted itself out by itself. If it didnt,it would have had to be cut out.

Dunno about those Staffies,i got badly bitten by one on a job once.....

Sorry to hear of your wife's sister's Staffy. Ticks are rotten things.

Also sorry to hear you were bitten by a Staffy. All the Staffies we have met have been VERY people friendly; but I guess it's all in the way they are trained - as it is with all dogs.

Ours isn't at all keen on cats...but then again, neither are we.

Good stuff, glad all is OK.
Our Staffy Cassie loves Chicken, Fish (especially raw) or anything else she can get.

Here's mine doing what he loves best:

He loves it so much that he's had to be dragged back to shore by surfers after venturing out too far.

It was a couple of years ago so he's a bit greyer around the chops now.

Staffy's love to do anything if they think it's a game. This broom was her favorite thing, even after she destroyed the head on it.

That's good news. Glad he's on the mend.

We got word from our house sitters that our GSP caught an Ibis the other day:eek: Bloody gun dog! We have a cat that is afraid to go outside and is scared of birds - we like to think he is "Environmentally Friendly" - and a GSP that is like every other GSP and instinctively hunts.

Just hope the Ibis wasn't to dirty when she got hold of it or it might be worse than your rabbit.

OK, BBC...Here's our mate - taken a few years ago before he started to go a distinguished shade of grey:)

You're right about Staffies being intelligient - we've had a few breeds of dogs over the years, but Cougar has been the easiest to train..it's a real pleasure to have him as a companion.

I have a real soft spot for Staffies. Besides being intelligent, they are described as:

Description:
The Staffordshire Bull Terriers are known to have great strength for their size. They are stocky and muscular, but should also be active and agile. The breed is the 5th most popular dog in the UK (its place of origin), and it is the only breed to have the words 'totally reliable' in its breed standard. Furthermore, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is one of only two breeds from over 190 recognized by the UK Kennel Club to have a mention of the breed's suitability with children.

Simply.....a great dog.

That bit from the royal canine society about staffodshire's was the main argument for why we got a staffy for our ten year old. That bloody staffy just loves her with all her heart. Which is why I forgiver her everynight I come home from work and there is another hole dug in the garden

You buggers, all this talk :(

Now I want my own dog ;)

Never had a Staffy, my first was a Labrador x German Short Haired Pointer, my brother got his sister. They ran away hunting and never came back :(

Next was a family dog, little Jack Russell by the name of Maggie :D many great memories with her. My brother ran her over by accident, he must have felt bad. Poor bugger

Then I had my own. Baz was his name. Awesome dog, very intelligent and very fit. I had a disagreement with my old man and long story short he gave Baz away on me  I agreed because I was living with mum at the time and never had a chance to see him :(

Now, in town we have my brothers dog a Jack Russell (Maggies daughter) and Brook a German Sheppard x Kelpie x everything. She was originally supposed to be mine but took to mum instead ;)

Not a Staffy but I thought you might still like a pic of Basil Dog :p

(They sure are mans best friend, I wish I still had Baz more than my ex - just quietly :p )

These stories, especially the original post reminded me of a staffy cross I had once (Tina, or miss T as some called her).

A friend and I had just started boiling up some pork brawn and we had left the ears and snout and a few other trimmings on the balcony. I went to get these trimmings and noted a few bits missing and a rather content miss T, ah well, she can have the chewy bits I thought and thought nothing more of it.

Anyhow, a week and a half later, a very lethargic grumpy miss T with no appetite emerged from her sleeping bag and I got worried. I was due to fly back into the bush with her that week so thought I had better get her checked over just in case.

The vet said she had to undergo surgery pretty much as soon as they could prep her and an hour later he emerged with a large animal eartag... It had 13 on it and he said this was blocking the bowel... I simply couldn't figure it out until I remembered the missing bits from the brawn brew... included a pair of ears. I laughed for two reasons that morning, one to see miss T back on the front seat sitting up with a sparkle, and two, the tag that had taken pride of place on my key ring for years afterwards and I never made brawn again... :D
