D2 TD5 Won't start.

Hello All,

I am a newbe so please go gentle on me. I am not a mechanical genius but have put a couple of cars together when I was a young petrol head.

I have a 2000 D2 TD5 with about 330K on the clock. In the main it has been serviced by Bruce Davis with whom I have been happy with his service. As the vehicle has got older the cost vs asset value has become disproportionate. So it is time to get my hands dirty again.

The other day under normal throttle I heard a "pop" noise, as I was close to home I continued on without too much grief. I stopped the vehicle thinking that was strange. When I went to start it the thing blue black smoke and felt like it had a collapsed turbo hose. This what I did.

1. Called Bruce he said it sounded like the inlet was blocked or the turbo has passed its use by date.
2. Checked the turbo hoses by removing them and inspecting them, they have a bit of gunk on the inside otherwise they seemed OK.
3. Checked everything that inputs to the turbo ie filter, air flow meter, wiring connectors. All seems OK.
4. Removed the intercooler seems OK. I blow air in one side and it come out the other.
5. Checked that the turbo spins. Seems OK.
6. I got excited when I read the EGR and MAP threads so I took them off. Both were covered in black heavy grunge as well as the inlet manifold. So I cleaned them. I have an EGR without the butterfly value, so I am thinking I should be happy.
7. I took off the turbo. The compressed air outlet is think with black grunge and there is oil on housing where the alloy joins the iron casting. Else it spins OK. I have photos if only I wasn't a newbe I would know how to upload them

My question is is the turbo stuffed and where can I get reconditioned one if it is. Else where can look for solutions.

Gday Giff,not sure what your asking , but if the car wont start the first thing to check is if the fuel pump is running..they have an electric pump so turn on you ignition and if you go to the back of the car you shoulkd hear a high pitched humm noise the pump is in the tank.
The pop noise you heard could be one of you intercooler hoses coming off, a few people have had them pop the hose clamp off.
Does the car fire.?or wont it run

Thank you for your reply, I apologise if my description is a bit confusing, so am I at this point.

I changed the fuel filter and made sure the complete bleed/pressuring process was completed a number of times. When I turn on the ignition the fuel pump does pressure up. The thing just will not fire, it has got damn close but won't go that bit further and kick over.

Regarding the hoses I cheched all of these both for popping off and de-lamination.

Also check your battery - cranking voltage is critical on Td5's.

Check the electrical connector at the front of the head for oil contamination. If oil is found, check the connectors at the ecu, although the oil can seep to sensors before it gets to the ecu plug and still cause problems.

Gday again Giff, I went thru something similar a couple months back,the only thing is the pop noise,my problem ended up being the belt adjsting pulley had seized solid and the car would crank but wouldn't fire , even with 2 batteries connected to it.The turbo shouldnt effect the starting, only when you give it power.My suggestion is remove the main belt and try and start the car, this will tell you if any of the drive pulleys are seized.I also had a stuffed harmonic balancer. my car has 210k on it so at 330k its possible..Worth a try IMHO

Hello all,

Thank you for your input, i really appreciate them.

I have removed then completely inspected and cleaned the wiring harness as i knew of previous faults. So I cleaned it, wrapped it and cased it in corrugated tubing all good. Good idea and thank you for your consideration.

The battery connections are fine as is the battery, the motor cranks until the battery expires. Again thank you all input is worth considering.

Regarding the seized belt, problem fixed. The idler pulley I have previously replaced the bearing and the belt, it worked a treat, cost me about $20 for the bearing thanks to Autopro Nowra plus a new belt $150+.

I was hoping blacknight and the stig may have some valuable input
