I have noticed a small leak which has now got worse. The tank is in the red on the gauge but fuel is still leaking from somewhere underneath, I can see it all over the rear axel etc. Anyone aware of a "usual" source of this problem? I am not very technical regarding the mechanics of the Defender but am trying to save money by fixing it myself. Where can I get a good manual from or download?

Thanks for you help all

assuming its a TDI its probabley the return line cracked or you have a hole in the tank under the support plate. (depending on what style of tank support you're running)

if its the td5 you have a leak from one or both of the pressureised supply fittings possabley a cracked hose. you can also have a rub through at the bottom of the tank but I havent seen that on a plastic tank (yet)

not sure this will help but we hired a 110 at fraser a few years ago and the guy there replaced his tanks with a plastic one out of a jeep, reckons almost a straight swap and a bigger size, might be an option if you can find one at a scrappie.

Have you got a protector plate under the bottom of the tank (i.e. a separate piece if tin-work)? If so, unbolt it an take a look directly at the bottom of the tank.

I've replaced one where the gravel & crap between the shield and the tank wore pinholes into the tank with vibrations etc. Started as a very slow leak and got progressively worse.

Fitted a new tank. Not too hard. Took about 3 hours of mucking about, and it's easier with 2 people.

Am embarressed to admit it was the small plastic top from the fuel filter, it had snapped but not completly come off. I replaced the filter and plastic cap, job done. Thanks to all for advice though.:)
