View Full Version : How to wire an Anderson Plug?

I'm looking to wire an Anderson plug directly off my second battery and I'll keep the connection in the bonnet area so I can easily access power via an Anderson plug without using terminal clamps or removing the battery cover.
I'll be changing the power cord on my compressor to an anderson plug and also putting a plug on the clamps so I can use the compressor on other cars if needed.
The question I have is..how do I actually physically connect wires to a grey Anderson plug? Have done a bit of a search and it wasn't real obvious. Do you connect wires via crimp plugs or solder them directly or other?

it depends on if you have real or imitation plugs.
real ones have pop in crimp lugs that lock in place, trim the wire insert it into the lug crimp and then push into the plug.
some of the cheaper knock off versions have a fold over solder fitting, same basic principal but you fold the tabs over to lock the wire in place then solder it before pushing the pin home into the plug.

Actually all the Anderson plugs I have seen whether genuine or not have been the crimp type.
I've soldered some anyway as I don't have the proper crimper and some are temporary anyway.
I've also seen on the Andersen website that you can get a roll of the solder/crimp type ones. I guess if you want a roll of them that the normal crimp lugs wouldn't be able to supplied in a roll.

All sorted. Just needed to understand how they work.
i had the "good" grey ones. Crimp the wire into the brass "spade type" terminals. Push terminals into socket as far as they go (pretty much to the front of the socket) so they hook over the internal terminals. All good!
Job is half done. Anderson socket connected to aux battery. Will hack into the power cord on the compressor next weekend maybe..

Has anyone noticed how much these things differ in price!
Jaycar sells a knock off brand for about $15 each.
Autobarn sells Narva ones for about $25 each.
Drivesafe sells the genuine ones for $7.50 each
I bought a pack of 10 from him for $6.50 each.
Plus he looks after us AULRO guys on price and service.
I have 50 amp Andersen plugs on everything to do with the LR and camper

Yep, will add the fuse next week as well. The compressor has a inline fuse anyway so not super critical but best to have it on "my" side of the plug.

Just did same on Defender. I put anderson plug on bullbar (so dont have to open bonnet) used 100amp wire (bit extreme) and 50amp glass fuse at battery. Also put Anderson plug on compressor. Also I will be using it to charge battery with solar panels (waiting on this). Sweeeet.

I was thinking of wiring one in with the plug in the side of the battery box under the pax seat if the Defender - that way I can just open the door and plug in, rather than having to undo seats etc etc.

Hi,
This is where I bought my anderson plugs from when I did a second battery in the coaster I had. They seem to have good prices and really quick post.
